View Full Version : Wot was your first car?

Minky

I saw a Triumph Acclaim today, and it was just like my first car - although in much better condition!
You never forget your first do you? It was a gold one, allegedly  only 60,000 or so on the clock, 1.3.
I think the Acclaim was built in collaboration with Honda wasn't it - so semi-Japanese. Every other car I've owned has been Jap :D
I loved that car to bits, paid £500 for it and it only lived for six months (shoulda known   )

So thought I'd start this thread - anyone else for a trip down memory lane?

First car was a sunbeam rapier.

Damned quick car for its year.

Paid a massive £25 for it.

Learned to drive in my mum's Allegro, then bought a Mini Clubman estate for myself. However after a few months, at MOT time to be precise, it transpired the sills were more filler and fibreglass than metal. As my mum was at the time buying a new car she let me have the Allegro, which served me well for about a year after that.

It had heated mirrors and left the electric windows switched on for 30 seconds after you had removed your key. Both extremely useful, but neither of which the 200SX has...

It was ace, 2l twin cam lump in it and RWD! Needless to say I put it sideways, up a banking, into a tree, then nose dived into a field, flipped onto the boot, then rolled roof to wheels 4 times!

My first car was a black mini clubman, stripped of everything inside except a seat and running about 100bhp.
1.3 metro engine,
MED race head,
weber 40's
the list goes on the engine alone cost 3K to build,
full adjustable suspension and ride height,
widened (the wheels didnt sit under the car at all, had to buy new arches to cover them,
uprated brakes,
full ss exhaust,
ITG sock filters.
I loved that car so much but it was really hard to drive on the road as it was pretty much set up for a track. I eventually put it into a embankment at 60mph when the wipers jammed and i couldnt see where i was going.
Luckily race harnesses work well.

None of this namby pamby fwd rubbish.....

At 18, I went out and got me a Manta GTE

Chopped two coils off the springs

Fitted Princess Four pots on Carlton 2.2 Discs

It stopped so hard it made your nose bleed - and in the wet did nothing but lock up!

The manta no doubt influenced my choice of personal transport thereafter (exc. fwd company cars)
