Hi,

Does anybody know of a piece of FREE (to be used on a works pc) software that can password protect folders and files on a pc. (XP Pro.)

I have found several apps. on the likes of tucows and downloads.com etc. but nothing with a free licence.

Cheers,

Mike

if it's xp pro then the ntfs filing system means that only peeps with the correct permissions will be able to access your folders and files. If you are trying to stop the administrator accessing your folders and files then the only real way to do this is with encryption.

or just zip the files and password the zip file :)

Yeah thats what I'm after a folder encryption software, I've found kryptel lite but this doesn't support folder encryp. and seems to crash on xp. :(

Sx Drifter... I thought about the winzip idea but the problems is I dont have winzip on my works pc and if they found an unregistered copy of it I would get told to remove it, as my works have purchased a site licence for some other zip software... Naff I know.

the search goes on.... ;)

zip files are very easy to crack so the admin would prob just brute force the password. Use something like PGP for good protection but choose a good password.

PGP...?

I'm not after anything to cleaver, something just to stop jog bloggs "who may use my pc when I'm on a day off" looking at some of my personal stuff (work stuff like word documents etc...)

pretty good privacy, i used to have a really cool piece of shareware that let you create a file and attach it as a drive. you stored all sensitive stuff in the drive and dismounted it when finished. To access it again you would open the software and mount the file / provide the password and the drive would then be in my computer. Worked very well but i can't remember the name of it. I will have a look and see if i can find it.

Try doing a search for "File securer". It's what I'm using now and it's pretty good.

Edit: It's an exe file, so download at own risk :wack:

Yeah I downloaded apiece of software like that. It created a VIRTUAL drive and password protected it, but the free licence ver. only allowed a 20mb virtual drive.
