 yes you need to put down a layer of fome you can get it from lammi floor places (comes on a role). if you don't the floor will make noises when you walk on it, any grit left on the floor will crunch ever time you walk over it, if the tiles are un level you will need a thicker underlay

I laid a lamiinate floor last night mate. I would go for fibre board underlay. You can get it in B&Q about £19 a pack that covers 10m^2. You can use that thin white stuff but it's crap compared to this green fibre board sheets. It gives a lot more support to the floor and is lovely to walk on.

The white roll is cheaper and only really useful for smooth surfaces (you could lay over a couple of sheets to make it thicker). The green board is more expensive, but I think its better too.

had lamy floor put in today. kitchen is tyles straight onto ground, so damp can come up.
got membrane, then the green fibre board, then the laminate (all b&Q) went for the big square tile look. well smart. about£30 for 4 boards though

If you're putting the floor downstairs you need to put a damproof membrane underneath then a layer of foam followed by the laminate, Upstairs there's no need for the damp proofing.
