Why can't I copy pages of the manual to my clipboard? The Acrobat help says you can, but it's not happening. Copy isn't highlighted in the menu.
Is it because it's a free version?
By the way, it's an i-Mac.

If it's not possible, is there any other way of importing PDF documents into Works?

God, I hate computers! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/rolleyes.gif

It's because the manual is just a bunch of 900 scanned images, it's not created from real text like a normal PDF document would be.
It it were created from text you can then copy/extract the text from the pdf.

You could print it out thn OCR it if you have a scanner and are really that desperate. to do it.

Damn I forgot to test the torque wrench pain thing, will do it tonight.

Are the PDF files protected? If so, then you can't. Try a screen capture tool such as snagit

Ah but Billy, the manual is far from normal as far as pdf goes.

Normally you create you document using text and pictures in you favourite word processor or DTP package then you use a tool (e.g. adobe Distiller) to convert it into PDF.
Doing it this way it compresses the document but retains information of the original discrete elements, text, pics etc. Hence you can highlight them and copy them out.

Unfortunately each page of the manual is just one scanned page with no discrete elements so you cannot hightlight them to pull them out. It's not really a true pdf file, or lets say it's not how Adobe intended it to be used.
Therefore you cant do it I'm afraid.

Oh.

So is there any way I can do it, or should I just go and buy a paper manual and save my brain?
I've got a Winrar (I think) version on disc too, so is it possible to convert that to something I can use? (my next door neighbour has PC stuff)

I reckon you must be able to buy a plugin that lets you import a PDF document into a word document
Id have a look at adobe and M$ websites - possibly even mail the Acrobat support gentlemen

Winrar is just a way of compressing the files, once uncompressed it's still a pdf.

I'm not sure what is available but do you know anything about OCR (Original Character Recognition)? Normally you scan a document which the OCR software thresholds the image using contrast, gamma etc to isolate the characters and then compares the shapes to a database to work out what the original character was.
It's not 100% acurate but not bad these days.

What you need is a bit of OCR software that will allow you to use the manual or a screen grab of the bit of manual to do the OCR on instead of using a scanner to produce the image. There must be something available.

Do you have a scanner & printer?

I'll have a look for you tomorrow if you like.

All sounds a bit involved if you ask me.
I only wanted to clean up the pages before I print them. Save ink and all that.

Seems strange that you can send an image to your printer, but not to another application which is apparently capable of accepting it!

What exactly are you trying to do, reformat it or just clean the dodgy scan marks etc off?

If the latter you just get it as big as you can on the screen, take a screen dump then edit in you fave picture editing software then print it. But feck me you MUST be soooo bored to wanna do that.

That's exactly what I want to do!

I'm not sure how taking a dump on my screen will help though! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

Care to elaborate at all?

Screen dumps, that is, not bodily functions.

And you already know how much I don't know about this stuff....

Hmm.. I can copy parts of the manual to clipboard fine. Like this

http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/rides/papa_lazarou/s14vacuumdiagram.jpg

Just use the Graphics Select Tool which is there at least in windows Acrobat 5. I would have thought the Mac version would have the same functions.

Oh you want to know how to take a screen dump. Sh!t Sorry just thought you were taking the p!ss.

Well in Windows there is a button called print screen which copies the current screen to the clip board which you can then paste into a graphics package and do what you want with.

If there is no such button on the MAC I suggest you try www.tucows.com (http://www.tucows.com) navigate to a server near you (In UK) then search for screen capture in the MAC section.

Let me know how you get on, if you like I can ask my MAC mate at work and then get you the best possible solution, then either make it downloadable for you or send you another disc, which ever you'd prefer.

I did know who Heath was. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/wink.gif
