Heya all!
I'm sitting here about to go to bed, and I'm reading the 300zx thread and someone's only gone and mentioned an RX-7 ...
I started thinking about how nice those cars are, how low and small the last one I saw on the roads which had a huge HKS exhaust on it. Then I remember the ones off these Best Motoring vcd's and the jap's absolutely love them.
So I was thinking, why don't we have a mass opinion-gathering session of what everyone thinks of all the new and old Jap rear-wheel drive machinery?
Nissan 200SX S13 - Surely a classic. Cheap, fast, stylish. Huge amounts of add-ons available. Why do I like this car? It's incredibly fun to drive. I can be in a foul mood and just go out for a drive and (assuming roads are traffic free) just really chill out and have some fun in it. Controllable drifting, powerful engine, HIGH top speed! And you can get a good one for less than a new micra! Fantastic.
Honda NSX - Mid-engined Ferrari rival? Definitely has shown itself to be capable of living up to that name. Ol' Jeremy Clarkson loved this car. It's got a beautifully made normally aspirated, very responsive engine, a long, elegant shape and styling. Expensive? Yes, rather. But so's a Ferrari, a Lamborghini. Myself, I don't know if I would pick this over one of the other cars I mention here. It's nice.. but .. I think I'm hooked on the..
Mazda RX-7. What a car! FanTAStic design, powerful engine (latest version went right up to the 280bhp 'limit'), amazing handling. From watching some Jap ex-pro racing drivers drive these things and just drift them whenever they want, you get the impression that this is one very sorted car. I hear the engine can be a swine to service, cost you an arm and a leg. Man I really like this car - I can't believe Mazda UK couldn't keep importing them!
Nissan 300ZX. I've never driven or been in one, but I've seen a few on the road and hundreds on the net. Nissan's grown-up sports car, huge power and a very supercar look. I have no idea what these are like to drive, but they sure look fun.
Toyota (AE86) Corolla/Trueno GT - I have no idea what the proper name for one of these is, but a small hatchback with a 120bhp 1.6 litre engine and rear-wheel-drive sounds like a fantasticaly fun nippy car. Obviously you get all manner of engines going into these things - I've got a small video clip of one with a *600bhp* triple rotor rotary engine in one and MY GOD DOES IT SHIFT. Err sorry... getting carried away http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif
These things are like the no.1 favourite for young japs who want to go out and drift in their little groups and teams. www.club4ag.com (http://www.club4ag.com) has some fun clips of these things in action and there's probably more around the net too. Unfortunately I don't think I've ever seen one for sale. I'd love to try one though!
Ok gotta dash - lemme know what you all think, and if I've missed anything off (Yes, the S14, I know, but I've -zero- real world experience with these http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif ) please add your opinions / experiences! Bye!
