lost one of my housemate's girlfriend's rats that I'm supposed to be looking after.... chased it around the garden for ages, she sounds like she' hiding behind the shed now, but there's no way I can get in there - tips to lure or force her out? Tried a cat.... :wack:

Food
Works with most things really, what's her favorite munchable?
Just bung that outside the shed.

In fact, try leaving the 'ratarium' ( :wack: ) outside and open, my gerbils used to return themselves home of there own accord if they'd achieved the great escape - as we had 2 cats at the time I think I'd have returned to safety aswell :smash:

Get a humane rat trap, they are usually in the form of a cage or box with a door or flap which drops down after the victi..er pet has entered. not sure where you get one though, pet shop might be a good start

Or get some of the rats favorite food, place it on a small dish, place dish under a cardboard box with one end supported with a stick connected to a piece of string, which you hold the other end of in a concealed position, now you wait untill the rat goes for the food and pull the string at the right moment and voila, one captured rat

You never know it might work

Good luck

Bollocks to that, I'd have to stay up all night! Hell, it's only a rat, have 3 others.... as suggested by FMG I've left a spare cage out with loads of bedding and some food in it, either she'll return, or one of the neighbours' cats'll get lucky.

call the council

Why?

rats *love* bread...

the ultimate way of getting a rat back though is smelly blue cheese but don't let it eat it because its not very good for them.

Although I'm surprised your friend gave you their rats to look after with your "it's only a rat" attitude

Well, she has/had 4 of them, and I still have the coolest one ;)

She ****s me off to be honest - her and her boyfriend (my housemate, "turboferret") bought them, and now he's working in Serbia for 8 months, and she's off at uni, which means I'm left looking after them. Now he's good about it, appreciates me looking after her rats, says thanks and all that. She on the other hand, she's never once said "please" or "thank you", gets right on my tits, she just *assumes* that I'll look after them while she's not here and then ****s off.

Our rats love Bread. Tuna might work better tho as it's more smelly. You should be able to just call it to get it back, sometimes ours deliberatly play hide and seek which can go on for hours. Fun for them but boring for all of us after a while

If you have taken on the responsibilty then you should look after them correctly. It not the animals fault you have been left with them so don't treat them badly. I would suggest making an effort to recapture the one that got out.

THEN why instead of talking about it here pick up the phone and say to the girl and her bf - no sorry this isn't working out. I can not look after your pets anymore so i suggest you get alternative arrangements made within a week.

How are they going to know if you have a problem if you don't say. At the moment they just think you are fine with it because you are doing the work

I am  - some people shouldn't have pets - even if you say its just a rat - You house mate is a complete arse for buying an animal and neglecting it.

I would suggest re homing them to someone that actually cares !

I do look after them, and spent about 4 hours yesterday trying to catch the poor girl. Frankly your comments have made me pretty

She knows I resent having to look after her rats, but she's such a selfish bitch she couldn't give a ****. She knows I have no choice other than to cause great upset, which frankly isn't worth the hassle. She treats her bf, and me, as doormats, and whilst I'm not as bad as him, I guess I take it...

It's definately not his fault, she bought them, and he can hardly help having to work in Serbia for 8 months.

If I didn't care I wouldn't have spent 4 hours on my knees digging through compost and spiders trying to find the rodent. So get to ****

From your previous posts you made it seem like an entire joke so i would read back over what you have written and then re read my post. You might not like what i have written but i have not taken it as a joke - for me personally i won't - if you have not realised from other posts i take my animals and their care seriously.

And all of the above ^^ say it to her - say it to the person it matters too instead of getting in a rage with me

You let her walk all over you she will - maybe she needs to learn this even if it will cause you hassle - if not - good luck for the future then cause she will just carry on using you guys

I have a couple of Gerbils and they are bloody murder to catch when they escape. Best thing we have found is either:

a) Get them out in the kitchen - their little clawed feet wheelspin on shiny surfaces, making them a sight easier to catch (and drift - rodent drifting is  )
b) Get as much shyte out of the way then go in with a towel and just throw it over them. If you need to get them out of a tight spot, poking with a long stick or spraying with a water pistol works nicely

Arent rats like tame though?? Wont it come back for food when its hungry??

If you haven't yet found the Rat in question (I only v.quickly read through this thread) may I suggest a bit of cat food - smelly and my Rats love it. Or to be perfectly honest any sort of food (particularly smelly) will do - when I was putting some food in my cage once, I dropped the jar of food on the floor , turned my back (leaving the cage open - DOH :smash: ) and shat me pants when I realised one of them had gotten out. But there he was sitting just under the bed nibbling on some Rat food that they had chucked out of the cage previously  :smitten:
