View Full Version : New Car
I want to keep the mileage down on the 200 and hate my company Saab so I want to get a tatting-about-to-work-don't-give-a-stuff-if-I-trash-it, cheapo sort of car.
On the list at the moment are
* Nissan 100NX
* Nissan Sunny/Micra (try not to laugh)
Practicality isn't necessary but reliability and next to nothing running costs are. Max Cost £750.
Anyone have any comments on the above or other ideas?

JB,
I'd go for a WV scirroco. You can get a mint 10 year old Scala (1.8 GTi) for under a grand, they are dead cheap to run, rarely break down, reasonably nice to drive, with decent performance, they don't rust and run forever.

Another thought...what about those sunny coupes - were they called 100zx or something? htey are also dead cheap, and a bit different.
I agree, go for a VW Scirocco. I had one before my first 200sx, it was nippy handled well and never rusted. I bought it with 120k on the clock and it never went wrong.
You should be able top pick up a 1.8 GTX for around £500.

Pug 205 diesel. Don't rust, slow & not what you would call fun to drive but last forever (300,000 miles +) and at 600 miles to £30 pounds of fuel v. cheap to run. Thats what i got as a biff-about car, and save the 200 for the days i want to upset impreza drivers.

I do like the Scirocco but it'll be quite expensive to insure and I suppose and they are getting on a bit now for repairs etc.
Clong (interesting name http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/wink.gif)
The 205 sounds ok.......but never diesel....aagh, that's for tractors http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

get an XR2 and do a 1/4 mile run with Stuymac. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif
Sorry, JB, but if you want something to eat those miles and cost sod all then it'll have to be a diesel.
The fuel economy is amazing - the Pug 205 non-turbo diesel does 60 mpg (no sh*t)!
I am in a similar-ish quandry at the moment- I'm looking at changing jobs and would have to drive to work if I do (currently I train it). If I had a company car (though not a bloody SAAB - what the hell do you do for a living??!!) I'd get taxed to death.
If I drove my own car I couldn't use the 200 'cos I'm not prepared to put the mileage on it.
SO, I've been thinking about this for a while and I reckon 306 TD (not necessarily the D-Turbo, any TD). It looks ok, handles well and will return a reasonable MPG.
Other than that I suppose Mondeo or Cavalier (not Vectra).
How about a second 200 - like a less pristine one? You can pick up a reasonable G/H-plate for £2500 with some miles on it.
I know diesels are tractor's and all that (i was born suffolk so i have a natural affinity for tractors), but they are CHEAP and in the daily grind of rush hour traffic it will go just as fast as any other car (including, dare i say it, 200sx). As an added bonus you get to play around with understeer, which is different. Plus when you get back into the 200, things just seem soooo much sweeter. The only reason i got the pug was 'cos i comute 70 miles a day, trains are crap around here and the money i am saving on petrol go's toward moding the 200 (Saab intercooler arrived yesterday, yeehaaa). Now that has got to be best reason for running a diesel if ever there was one.
And JB, dude, Clong came from when used to sign my name C. Long, but because i've got pants handwriting, everyone called me Clong, so it stuck. Not that interesting but it's the truth.
the sunny coupe you refer to is the sunny zx coupe....no 100 required!! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif
you can get either a 1.6i engine or a 1.8i engine, i had the 3dr hatch version (still do altho i'm trying to sell it), and they ain't bad at all, dunno bout the coupe, but the hatch is such a street sleeper and can whoop any so called gti.....L.S.D and electric everything, u would be well advised to look for one.....

DRIFTING?? I don't believe i was, officer....
Yes it does look like a diesel would be the 'sensible' option.
Strangely, when you consider what I've said about them in the past, the thought of an XR2 did cross my mind then I could go and play boy-racers with Stuymac http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif
Can anyone tell me if wearing a BBC the wrong way round and driving 7 up with the suspension on its endstops is compulsory when driving these or is it just a desireable option.
Stuymac, any thoughts http://cwm.gamerforums.com/s/otn/laughing/yelrotflmao.gif

How about a Daihatsu Charade Gtti? Quite quick, fairly cheap insurance (Group 10 I think). 3 Cylinder 1 Litre Turbo'd engine so quite economical. Cheap Tax aswell. Should be able to pick an old one up for £700 too.
Performance figures:
99Bhp
0-60: 7.9 seconds
Top speed: 116

i had a sunny zx coupe 1.6i for about 4 years, the longest i have ever owned one car, because it was so much fun.
sure, it screamed at 4k rpm at 80mph in 5th, but it handled brilliant, gave 30mpg, never ever broke down and i took it from 60 to 130k miles in those 4 years.
up and down the m11 every weekend, screaming round the fens during the week..
well worth it for a runabout...
