http://www.sfrc.ufl.edu/4h/Hawthorn/crasppls.jpg
Plant Description
Hawthorn is a common thorny shrub that grows up to five feet tall on hillsides and in sunny wooded areas throughout the world. In May its flowers bloom, but even though hawthorn is in the same botanical family as roses, the flowers are not fragrant. They grow in small clusters, and are white, red, or pink. Small berries, called haws, sprout after the flowers. They are usually red when ripe, but they may also be black. Hawthorn leaves are shiny and grow in a variety of shapes and sizes
What's It Made Of?
Hawthorn contains many substances that may benefit the heart. However, it appears that two substances in particular -- flavonoids and oligomeric procyanidins (OPCs) -- are most likely to contribute to hawthorn's beneficial effects on the heart. Flavonoids help dilate blood vessels, improve blood flow, and increase heart rate. Both flavonoids and OPCs have potent antioxidant effects.
The berries, leaves, and flowers of the hawthorn plant are used for medicinal purposes. The leaves and flowers are believed to contain substantially more of the active compounds than the berries

Pop down to your local garden centre, they'll sell it as people use Hawthorn for hedging etc.

The Vapourer - Orgyia antiqua
An unusual species in many ways, the males fly during the day (although the example depicted was attracted to light at night).
The females are virtually wingless, an attribute normally associated with winter-emerging species, but the adults are out from July to September, sometimes October in the south.
The female lays her eggs on what remains of the pupal cocoon, which then overwinter. When hatched, the very hairy caterpillars feed on a range of deciduous trees and shrubs.
The species is fairly common, especially in suburban habitats, over much of Britain, but more so in the south.
The hairs on the caterpillar's body can cause an itchy welt-like rash (tussockosis) in some people
"A caterpillar of the common vapourer moth (Orgyia antiqua) was introduced into a lizards' cage, and when attacked, instantly assumed the defensive attitude, with the head tucked in and the 'tussocks' separated and rendered as prominent as possible. An unwary lizard seized the apparently convenient projection; most of the 'tussock' came out in its mouth, and the caterpillar was not troubled further. The lizard spent a long and evidently most uncomfortable time in trying to get rid of its mouthful of hairs."
Adult
http://www.habitas.org.uk/moths/images/sets/6112smupt.jpg
Flight Period: Generally from early July until the beginning of October, although it is most commonly encountered during August and September.
Status: Widespread, but somewhat local in southern counties. Adults are never seen in numbers, even in localities where it is well-known. Its strongholds would appear to be in Armagh and parts of Down and Fermanagh, which is probably a reflection of recording effort, rather than its real distribution. Well-known haunts for this species in north Armagh, include Peatlands Park, Brackagh Moss NNR, the Argory and Selshion Moss.
Ecology: The Vapourer is found in a variety of habitats but is most frequently seen on bogs and woodland where its foodplants are commonly found. This species tends to be rather elusive and is probably overlooked or mistaken for a butterfly in many areas. Males fly by day in sunshine and are often seen flying at great speed and at height, which makes them difficult to catch. The female is wingless and remains at rest on her cocoon after emergence waiting for passing males. Most of the records are of larvae rather than adults. These are often to be found resting, exposed on the upper surface of leaves during the day. The larvae can be found from May to August on a variety of trees and shrubs. In N. Ireland it has been recorded on willows Salix spp., Bramble Rubus fruticosus, birch Betula spp. and Purging Buckthorn Rhamnus catharticus. It overwinters as an egg.

Do you want to borrow my insectecutor to see if it works? :D
this is the coolest thread ever!
What a cool moth! I love them, wonderful creatures :)
LOL, another weird thing I used to do when I was younger was breed tropical moths, surprisingly easy to do, a good one to start with is Moon Moths, should be quite cheap to get, as long as they are kept in the house the caterpillars are fine with temperature and (the caterpillar's) they eat rhodedendron so no problems there. The moths are Large and green with swept back tails on them, they don't actually eat as Moths so only live for a fortnight or two (or just enough time to mate and lay eggs all over your curtains).. and when they die and stiffen up they make great airoplanes
