I don't know anything about web design and would like to start. What do I need to know or get to start designing web pages?

Learn Dreamweaver / Flash. Try and avoid Frontpage, although easier, it gives you bad code practices etc.

Surely if you want to be a web designer the best place to start would be to learn HTML since all websites are at least based on content written in this language?

Search on google for "html tutorial" and follow the course you find most suitable for your experience...

I wouldn't agree.. Its getting like JAVA etc. you just use pre-written cammands to do stuff.. like a top level design world. Our web designers do not know a HUGE amount of HTML as frankly its not needed, although being able to spot bugs and browser compatabilty problems are!

Although we have a funny structure when code get sent to our techy programmers to sort out if there is a problem, whilst the true web designers do just that... web design. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif
