I've just spent some time on the phone with Manish from Option and he asked me to post the relavent parts of the conversation we had.

2 days ago Silverstone spoke to Option and told them the public indemnity insurance would no longer be covered by Silverstone. Option told Silverstone this notice was far too short and could they wave this until the next event, giving Option more time to organise the £5 million insurance needed. Silverstone said they couldn't.

I can imagine that Silverstone have reviewed their current insurance policy and found these events may not be covered. I am not sure if this is the case but it's perfectly understandable why Silverstone took this approach, even if it was very late. At the end of the day if your not covered by insurance Silverstone will not host the event, the ramifications are too huge to contemplate.

Option then attempted to organise insurance for the day and couldn't find anyone to provide it in reasonable time, hence the cancellation.

Manish sounded annoyed with the whole affair and did understand this was going to inconveience a lot of people. He has so far contacted as many people who have paid as he could via phone.

I then said the communication of this via the internet was pretty poor. He said that they ran out of time today trying to organise the insurance and didn't get chance to communicate this well to the relavent boards.

Manish told me that Option want as much input as possible about how the events should be run. I then commented that although this is true, the communication to the community of drifters in the UK wasn't very good. He agreed and we will be talking again soon to improve this situation.

I am not defending Option motorsports actions, I am simply putting forward the facts as told to me by Manish.

Please don't take it the wrong way guys, it's not Options fault, Silverstone caused this problem by a late withdrawl of their own cover.

I've been trying to help Manish sort a solution any way possible unfortunatley we struck a few too many problems along the way. Only a day to sort it out & it took me nearly 3 weeks!.

Options have been trying their hardest to resolve it for you guys so please don't be harsh on them......

I accept that Option have been trying to sort out a new venue for tomorrow but none the less we should have been notified that there may be a problem as soon as it arose. At least then it wouldnt have been a last minute suprise for us and hopefully everyone would have been aware of the problems.

Even if another location was found (Andover by any chance?:)) it would be too far away for many people to attend.

Its just as well the drifty users of this BB are pretty close knit so that we could ring round and let everyone know. Its just a pity that Option didnt feel the need to instead of a lame and inadequate post.

If i'd known earlier, wouldn't have had to do some ass licking to get permission from the missus to allow me to go to this one! :wack:

However, I don't think Option are to blame for the cancellation, but a phone call to us that have entered before would have been nice and courteous, there is only about 30-40 of us anyway. :annoyed:

This week, I have:

1) Tried to fit new brake pads and discs. (The calipers were found to be seized, so I had to borrow Tommys for a few weeks until I get them sorted)

2) Fitted Walbro pump to try and eredicate stumble (but it seems to have gone anyway!)

3) Got a couple of tyres fitted to rims.

4) Pulled some of the camber off the back cos it was really bad (like 5 deg or summat stupid!)

5) Been really really looking forward to Saturday so that I could have my first go of "proper" sideways stuff.

6) Got really really pissed when I found out it was cancelled. Now looking forward to a weekend helping Ben on his car, which (no offence mate) is nothing in comparison and I did it all day last Sunday too!

Hello all,

First thing to say is sorry for the cancellation of the 2nd practice, It was definatly not our fault that it had to come to that decision and we were trying so hard up until 5.30pm on Friday to sort the insurance out for the day but we had to cancel in the end as Silverstone were not going to bend the new rules on this one.

The minute we decided to cancel the event all the people that had paid were contacted immediately, we didn’t leave anyone out.

The reason we didn’t notify anyone earlier of the problems was because we had contacted Silverstone’s insurance company 'HSBC' who took our proposal and told us that it shouldn’t be a problem and that by Friday we would most likely have the insurance so we thought we were ok.. Come Friday and they rang us back saying they were unable to cover this event with such sort notice as they wanted a risk assessment etc.. Before they could provide the cover.
We then tried other insurance companies but were still unsuccessful.
We then tried Declan Hicks from conedogers who has liability insurance for his events so we thought if he turned up to our event we could use his cover at our event but it turns out that his limit is 2million pounds and we needed 5million.
We then contacted a track day company who might have been able to come to Silverstone with their insurance to cover the event but again when they contacted their insurance company they also said its too short notice.

We really tried hard to get the cover but in the end we just couldn’t do it with the time we were given.. and I still don’t know why Silverstone told us so late in the day. If they had mentioned the rule change at the 2nd round competition we might have been able to get the insurance.

An entry in the news section of ukd1.com was added regarding the cancellation.

We are still in the process of trying to sort out insurance for the remainder of the years events, however as we now have a little more time between now and the 17th July we are quite confident that we will get the insurance in place.

I will keep you all informed about the 3rd round but at the moment it is still going ahead as planned.

Thanks,
Manish Sidpara

Manish, I paid on Wednesday and nothing was said to me that it may be cancelled. Until Steve saw the post by "James" on Friday night and then subsequently phoning you, I was not contacted. Kiki had my numbers in case there was a problem with the Card payment (numbers wrong etc etc)....

Saying that, a post on at least ONE of the Boards may have been a bit more thoughtful. AFter all, the NEWS section is not the place I would head if I went to the D1 site - it would be the Forum...

Shit happens. Stop caning option (its thier way or the highway after all, what are you gonna do, quit doing the OPT days and just do the airfield days?) and get under your cars and get spanner spinning ready for round 3.

PS. I think the fact it was cancelled so late shows how much desperation and hard work Manish was putting in to try and find insurance...

No I wasn't. How on earth could you tell ;) :D

If I had been I'm sure I would have been dissapointed, as getting worked up for a day of legalised tyre smoking fun and then it being cancelled would be most dissapointing. Not to mention the wasted time loading the chariot with drift wheels, jack etc etc.

But the fact of the matter is nobody (AFAIK) had a wasted trip down from Scotland. Even if it was partly due to the wonderful network of special (but sometimes frustrating) friends that the SXOC forum provides us all with. :D

Cw

PS. I think we are losing sight of what happened- SILVERSTONE withdrew thier insurance at the last minute, and I'm guessing the guys at OPT have balls of meat not crystal...

I think you'll find most were saying how disappointed they were, its not as if they are held every weekend down in England. Ourselves in Scotland do have access to an airfield yes, pretty much anytime any day and only for a small fee. But its a different experience etc to do comp or different venue.

I'm sure no ones just gonna quit due to cancelled day either, also sure it helps some peeps to have a rant, human nature.

I also don't think most would moan too much about more airfield days, who would ? more time on track? more fun? and after all isn't that how it all started

OT: Paz i seen that Inside out footage !! HAHAHAH u look 12 ! looked class seeing how it used to be!

I don't like the attitude of its the their way or the highway !??! roflmao, if thats what u like to believe. Thats like saying its Asda or nowhere for ya food - well sorry but i guess through time there will be others out there holding such events and then maybe it might come down more to customer care, fun and experience.

Before you jump again i never said option never had or used these qualities, the post is to say people are allowed to be disappointed and lets hope the future brings more events and more venues so we just don't have to rely on the one place.

Variety is the spice of life :D

S13 Gimp
08-06-2004, 08:57
FRH: You say yourself it is a different thing from the airfield days, I mean how many D1 comps are there in the UK? So really If we want a slice of that we have to stick with OPT, and in a way its them or go to UK or JP D1 and sit in the crowd like gimps, as our standard isn't that high.

I didnt used to like silverstone as much as turweston but now with the better value etc and the twin drifting (not allowed at airfields thus far) its refreshingly different.

Cw

Cath
08-06-2004, 09:16
Yes i agree it is different

BUT......... depending on how things pan out and how people are treated will depend if they want to attend or not - to weigh up if the comp if worth the hassle, if you get my meaning. Best to just wait and see how things work out.

Twin Drift allowed up here :p

I reckon some small Gymkhana style events wouldn't go amiss, it would allow those with less power to show their skills. Some team drifting round a tight twisty track Japanese style would be great too, although i don't fancy sorting the insurance for that one.

Bon Bon
08-06-2004, 09:58
Well insurance is personal injury insurance surely? Low speed, tight twisty track, what risk of injury is there? Very little.

Also the Jap tracks tend to have gravel traps, sand traps etc to slow the cars down if they come off?

Would be fun to have "drift arenas" like they use in Japan, I guess they're karting tracks, but without walls 1 foot from the track.

It's my way or the highway baby! I kinda agree with you. AFAIK, OPT didn't call everyone to tell them. Unless Pazza wasnt booked in advance? Coz he didn't get a call, also some of my other "underground" non SXOC-gimp mates didn't get called either. D1 is getting better, used to be ghey, but still not enough time on track but this must be a Silverstone issue. Basically England is fooking gay and will never be as good as Japan so don't worry about it too much! ENGLAND IS GHEY! Even the French have drift days now and they dont make you queue. But the standard of driving in UK is crap. Too many mincer boy racers who dont have a clue.
