Ok peeps i have a dilema......

I gave up my job as a TV+VCR service engineer a couple of months ago cos i was gonna move down south with the bird.
Loads of electronics jobs down midlands way.

However, the bird decided that she "isnt ready" for this two weeks b4 im to move down   !!!!!!!

Anyway, ive been lookin for the past few weeks for a job in electronics without alot of success.
My problem is that i am time served as a TV+VCR guy, but its crap and i dont want to do it anymore. The trade is dying anyway.

I have only an HNC and most of the vacancies ive been looking at want a degree.

I think im gonna head to uni 4 a couple of years and get meself one of these degree thingys, problem is i dunno which one to go for.........
And also, doing this i might have to give up the 2 ***** :(
Sence says go with electronics cos thats me background.
On the other hand, IT seems to make lots of dosh :D

Basically im looking for a bit of input (if yous can be arsed) from peeps in IT or electronics.
Tell me pros and cons

Or just slag feck out of me for posting such a sad topic on this forum.

Kev I was in a similar boat, I did an HND 10 years ago, then got a job in optical/mechanical/electronic engineering.

This p!ssed me off ofter about 4 years so I did a Computer Science degree.

The degree I started was CompSci & Electronics, hated the electronics (couldn't do the maths, was all maths) so went with pure CS, but as you have a background will be far easier for you.

This leads to control systems/software design etc I suppose.

But I agree with Geof in that when a company advertises it advertises for their ideal candidate and 9/10 there never is someone that good. So there is luck involved in who actually applies for a job.

When I first got my HND I couldn't get a job because I hadn't any experience, how frustrating is that?
You are either underqualified & experienced or vice-versa. :(

But if you did the degree you'd be experienced & qualified.

Doing a degree is great as long as you have support and the finances to be able to. It changes your life.

Thanks alot for the replies guys.

Ive been speakin to a few peeps and checkin out some details and it seems i should be able to get finantial help in the region of £4k a year.

This is good cos it means i can probably run the 2 ***** still :D :D
major plus!!

I think it will be an IT degree cos demand seems to be far outstripping supply for IT, wheras its vice versa for electronics.

I think it will be pretty similar to your degree Jezz, so dont be surprised if i start asking u wierd questions in the next wee while ;)

So it looks like im gonna become a skiving student for the next few years.
Gonna be weird not working and complaining about these skiving student b@stards getting more dosh than me.

Thanks again guys.

Hey Kevs!

I have no degree. Didn't even go to Uni.

But, had a good interview, and got a decent job!

If you've got prior experience, all the better! At least in my IT field, experience is definitely looked at as a good thing!

Know what you mean about the TV trade Kev. Got made redundant about 6 years ago - been with the same co. 22 years. It was crap then and its even worse now. Crap pay and crap conditions.
I had no desire to go back to it, but really struggled to find anything in electronics -(C & G 222 qualification here). Was looking at support jobs in schools and colleges, but the money was really poor and even then I couldn't land a job! Part of my problem was age, but finally found work with plod in technical support. Good money and great conditions.
I'd say go with the retraining if you're up for it, - better prospects for the future certainly.

good luck

Dave

Well, i have e-mailed a couple of uni's, so i will see what they say.

I definately reckon its the way to go.
At 24 its really now or never!

And honestly, the fact that im recently single again and there will be lots of 18/19yo lassies at uni has nothing at all to do with it. :D
Honest.
Really.
What do u mean u dont believe me???

Ohhhhhh ok then i suppose its a MINOR consideration ;)
