View Full Version : Saturday 21st August - SXOC RR Day @ Thor
I have booked a day at Thor Racing (http://www.thor-racing.co.uk) on the 21st August 2004 for an SXOC RR shootout day. (Will be trying to get some decent press coverage aswell :))
The cost will be £45 each for which you will get usual stuff, Power, torque, air/fuel and pressures and temps. I know this seems like a lot for a discounted club day, but their usual price is £60 for a 2wd power run.
They have a dynapack which measures the power directly on the wheel hubs (so rear wheels off), rather than using a set of rollers, and therefore should allow for a more accurate figure :)
We have space for 18 cars, with a 30min turnaround.
Full £45 will be required up front, Cheques payable to THOR Racing
List of attendees so far

 Yes please, if they can give me meaningful figures on the auto.
yeh they can do autos and give a realistic figure at the fly but the transmission loss is quite horrific for an auto, i have a dino day there next weekend with the skyline owners club but if my plans go well i will have my beast up and running for then.
will be up for it either way, unless i dont blow something up
yes me  ill be there

according to their website, yes.

Yep, will add you to the list
according to their website, yes.
Ah but, the last one I went on at HLM in Bromsgrove, claimed to be able to do autos. In fact however they weren't prepared to do the necessary on the day because they claimed it would take too much time. As a result my reading were meaningless.
MattyGee
03-06-2004, 12:26
well im going over to Thor again in a week or so and i shall tell them then that we have a few auto's attending and require them doing properly :)
EDIT: tbh, HLM werent able to do manuals properly, let alone auto's :wack:
It's about time I found out how much power I'm running, I'll come along. :)
well im going over to Thor again in a week or so and i shall tell them then that we have a few auto's attending and require them doing properly :)
I've been emailing Pete@Thor about it, he seems quite confident that they should be okay (on the 14a's anyway), cause according to JB you can lock it in gear in 4th.
I'm just waiting on a reply from him to confirm that he can do it safely and reliably :)
It's about time I found out how much power I'm running, I'll come along. :)
Nice one Dan :)
I've justhad this reply from Thor re- auto's
"Andrew,
>Yes, there is a lockout button for 4th (on the 14a's anyway).
>Knowing this, I assume therefore you will be able to do it reliably and safely ?
For those cars that have this feature then 100% YES, no problem.
We can do the others but they may well be dissappointed in the results if we cannot hold one gear long enough without shifting up or down.
We often get away with running in a lower gear (2) but this gives slightly false torque readings (due to the gearing loss differences), the power will be the same regardless of gear.
Regards
Pete"
So guess this means your deff running JB
Do the 13's have the lock on 4th ????

Put in it 'D' and turn overdrive OFF and it'll hold in 3rd
At the last RR I attended in Andover they did it this way and although the graph was spikey on the way up, it was OK once it got into 3rd.
Also, they gave an "at the wheels" figure - would not commit to a flywheel figure ;)
I'm happy to confirm

Presume we'll convoy down Vez?
Although I might be going via Gregs to pick him up / pick some stuff up.

Looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday
I'll be in Nottinham visiting the inlaws,so will be bringing my brother-in-law along ;)
I was hoping to have my intercooler sourced and installed but sadly... it looks like I'll be the lowest powered :( (I'll talk to you about a chip Jez ;) )
Do we have a programme pencilled in... I know we'll be running in batches. I guess it'll be something like a batch of each (S13 then S14?) in the morning then another batch of each in the afternoon?
Yep, will hopefully be posting schedule and details etc and pm'ing all tonight/tomorrow :)
Right the day will kick off at 08:00, with the first car being on the dynapacks at 08:30.
Cars will go on in half hours slots, with a break for lunch around 1 ish.
Thor ask only, in order to speed process up, that you make sure you have all locking wheel nuts keys, and that the lockers are removed prior to you're turn. (Unless all your nuts are lockers, then perhaps its not a good idea )
The ind est is kinda secluded, so food provisions will be from a petrol station or the pub down the road really, unless you want to drive a far way away. I can provide details on the day :)
At the moment it does not look as though the full quota will be filled, so if people want an extra 15mins or so to setup fueling, boost controllers etc then Thor will also do this at discount rate.
We do have a few a spaces left too, however as its getting very close to the day, will prob have to pay the full £60 charge :(

Jez: Will you still be around at 12:30?
Yeah probably - going to leave just before lunch 1pm ish. Got to get home for 3-4pm.
jenks, its just off the a46, from the a45, if you want you can meet me as i am jsut off the a45 as we can convoy up, as its an arse to find if you dont know where you are going, if you take me in ur car we can save on parking also i dont think mine will be on the road :(
Steve, yeah no worries matey :)
Drifts, you're space has already gone. In fact it is now full !
Pm's should have been sent to all with final details etc.
For those that may be coming to spectate, parking is pretty tight at Thor, so if you can lift share that would really help out.
Thanks

Cheers Jacko .. top day out !!!
Well worth going even if just finding out that my boost gauge reads under ... I had cracked it to 15.5psi on the day (the max I have ever run) to get the fuellling checked, but that was ACTUALLY 1.25BAR !!! 18.5psi!!!!!
Turned it down to 14psi (on my gauge) that was 1.15BAR .. and got 244@hubs, with decently safe fuelling, that was the same boost Vez was running for 295@hubs ... he has better exhaust/FMIC & 555's mapped excellently by Gary .. the Thor boys were raving about how good his fuel mapping was.
I think I'll be buying a new boost gauge !!!!!
No wonder I blew my turbo gaskets !!!!
Good job I usually run 12/13psi ... thats actually 15psi
I suspect my turbo wont last long :wack:
I was happy to find out I wasn't detting my tits off and at 13.6 psi max I hit 220 BHP at the hubs.
I was running rather rich at the top end though :wack:

I was pleased with my modest 156 (hub) - and can't wait to fit the volvo fmic and get a chip sorted in the next couple of weeks ;)
The thing I was most pleased about was the fact the the exhaust analyser actually DID fit up my very narrow Powerflow tail pipe :D
I had a great day - and was very surprised by my result :)
The Thor setup seemed to be very good - the dynopacks are superb and I'll probably be going back to finish setting up my car.

What were the final results then?

I was actually a bit depressed at first... They did a power run and it kicked ALOT of shite out at the top end... So Jez had a word as they were going to alter the timing... They said it was detting at the top end... Altered the timing and it didnt make any difference... Was gutted as i thought i hadnt got a power run.... Then the guy came over and told me what Jez had said... And it may be the plugs... So i was looking at the sheets that they gave me and i didnt know what to make of it... Then mart said... Thats the most important bit... And pointed at 256bhp at the hubs  Then Jez said Oh i forgot that bit... Then i was like :D:D:D!!! Not bad with a S15 T28BB Tubby, .9bar, Hiper, K&N, Saab FMIC and Jez Stage 2... I was then :notworthy ...
Was playing up abit on the way home from Silverstone boosting to 1bar and then getting sortof missing/hesitation so it looks like i may need a few new bits...
What a pity...

Bethany has just seen this (OK... I showed her ;) ) and asked:
"Whos' that man???"
"Why has he got my handbag???"
My reply was,
"That's Martin, Daddy went camping with him a few weeks ago with lots of other men from the car club"
:D
Here are mine.

The drop in boost and power corresponds to the point where the AVC-R lowers the boost. I did this incase it ran lean at the top end. I guess the last pic shows i'm far from lean.

I wonder if I had the worst AFR of the day :wack:

I'm curious though, what's the the green figure? It's probably blindingly obvious. The yellow looks like peak.

Well the articles were very interesting and the bag so usefull for keeping those handy items in (spanners sockets, flick knife, cement mixer :smash: ) such a pretty colour too. It was very upsetting having to give them back at the end of the day, ahwell :wack: :ghey:

The yellow and green are actually just where Pete has marked with his cursor.
It could be the peak of each figure, or the point at which peak power was reached. I think it depends on what he thought the most interesting points on your graph are
