View Full Version : Handbrake
My handbrake is cr4p and being a novice drifter I really need to use it.
In the drift bible it says you should replace the rear brake pads for bettr hand brake performance. Which pads do you guys recommend and how much
Any other methods for improving the performance of my handbrake so the rear wheels lock up.
Personally, I think the handbrake is the worst way to learn to drift, REALLY snappy and sudden, difficult to catch.
Learn to weight shift. :)
Can't help you on the pads though, sorry!
Endless, project mu and Uras all make rear pads for drifting, but pretty hard to find in the uk. probably not needed in the uk as theres nowhere to do massive handbrake drifts anyway:(
I didn't use the handbrake at all apart from a few times in practice. I found that flicking/weight shifting was far more predictable and more controlable.
Do you purely weight shift or clutch kick as well?

Mostly use the weight and then power to get into the drift. Turn two I sometimes used a clutch kick. More practice and i'll be doing turn two in 3rd and then i'll need a cltuch kick because my revs wont be high enough.
I found OE Nissan rear pads better than EBC's, and fronts come to think of it :)
Just make sure your calipers are nice and clean, lube the pistons with copper slip and adjust the cable correctly(you'll still need to be an animal with the handbrake lever ;) ) and get the clutch in as you try to bend the handbrake lever :D
Im not too bothered about the correct or wrong way to drift. Not looking to be the next drift king just wanna have fun.
Using the handbrake on gravel is awesome. There is a really big gravel carpark near my house and its provided loads of entertainment. But when I use the handbrake on concrete it does feck all. It seems as though the handbrake is weak. If i could just get the handbrake to lock up the wheels on concrete..
adjust the cable correctly
Do I just tighten the bolt on the actual handle as tight as possible ? I dont need any special skills to do this ?
Pardon my ignorance but Im a total amateur mechanic
Just make sure there's a bit of play in it to release the brake when it's off
Are you depressing the clutch as you apply the handbrake?
Are you depressing the clutch as you apply the handbrake?
No Im not. Is it a case of putting clutch in, pulling up handbrake and releasing clutch when handbrake goes down ?
What are the physics behind this, what effects does it have on the car ?

Yeah you are supposed to press the clutch down before pulling the handbrake.
Think it is pretty bad for the diff if you don't hit the clutch.

Now think of it, if you don't press the clutch, your engine will stall if you actually succed with locking up the rear tires. Now go out and get sideways ;)
