View Full Version : Number of gears - auto vs manual

Before I start, this isn't a 'which is better' argment or anything.
Usually cars that are available in auto and manual have 1 less gear on the auto box, why is this? Cheaper to make a 4spd instead of 5spd or what?
Maybe it's to cut down on the "****, ****, why did you change gear then you bastard! argh!!!" spin moments :)
I imagine its purely technology. the first autos were 2 speed. Also I guess there's more room taken up in auto. The more gears the more oil lines and switcheds etc.
Autos completely baffle me though.
it has a lot to do with how the torque convertor works.
how it multiplys the torque give such a wide band to make lots of gears unnessery. for instance. the moment you stomp the throttle in an auto in 1st
the split second that happens upto 16 times the torque of the engine is coming out of the output shaft.
this then falls away untill it is back to 1 to 1. (this happens v.quickly)
if you can get you head around that idea you could understand why loads of gears are not needed.
the most i have come across is a 6 gear auto box on the leyland daf DROPS.
very complicated but thank god it's bullet proof :wack:

You'd better get it's lardy, tracked arse to the Bowling meet then! :smash:
You're only 2 hours further away than me tomorrow  :wack:

It's a 4 hour run, so 8 hours driving there and back, and with a 4am start. I think not. Not even the satisfaction of hearing your bones crunch under the 60000 ton weight of a front wheel will persuade me I'm afraid.
;) :wack: :p

Wimp
I got home from Stoofer's at about 2 in the morning after the turbo swap
Had 4 hours sleep, then went to work.
You don't actually do anything (you're management after all) so you can catch up on your sleep later
I had a test drive with the new Merc SLK 350 (http://www.mercedes-benz.de/mbd/desktop_gallerie/Bilder/Pkw/SLK_Klasse/SLK_01_1024x768.jpg) on tuesday. Its got a 3.5l V6, 272hp and is available with Mercs new 7-speed automatic box. All I can say is this thing kicks @ss! Its the first auto car I instantly fell in love with. Its shifting sooo smooth and its feckin quick. With this box the cars rated 5.5s 0-60...
JB, youll love it
