View Full Version : It's IMPOSSIBLE not to Scrabble a FWD car....
Well, I've owned by beasty Punto for a couple of weeks now and have been REALLY careful not to Scrabble ( http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif) all over the shop.
Despite much effort from myself I finally went Scrabbley-mental yesterday whilst pulling out of a junction.
I don't care what anyone says - FWD is b0llocks and that's that.

But what about all the advantages?
Like it's cheaper to make
Easier to package
Can be transfered, piecemeal, to another completely different car
More boot space
Better traction on the two days a year that it snows
Tyres only wear out at one end of the car
Now I'm struggling
Er, lighter
Less frictional losses
More user friendly torque reaction of transverse motor?
No, I can't do it. Every time I think of something, I think of ten things wrong with it!
But you can't say I'm biased..... http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif
Nice try, Billy, but they're sh!t, ok?

I think i must talk about my car more. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif
Youre right, FF sucks (everyone should know i want an FR car next)... But how is it, my FF will walk all over your "superior" FR anyday of the week? It smacks of irony if you ask me... http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif
And you have to ease the clutch out upon normal manual driving... *ease*
I think your auto has made you soft. If i can succesfully pull out of a junction with zero wheel spin in a 180hp turbo charged tin can, im sure a 2.3hp (just for you, Keith, my good man! lol) Punto can be driven from a junction with minimal fuss.

Er, Pazza, I think you forgot a decimal point on the power figure for the Punto... http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/wink.gif

'ere! I've just worked out that your Starlet has the same power-to-weight as my car! Bloody hell - my car's not being shown up by it's baby brother <runs off to turn boost up> http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/wink.gif

Did I read that correctly? A 180bhp starlet? Feck me, now I'm scared!! Surely though the best combination isn't FF, not even FR, but MR? Ferrari F355 anyone?

Hey Keith, hows things?
I changed my Punto HP rating for you http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif
As for the power to wieght thing, i remember doing this conversion when it was standard and comparing it to my Dads TT (RZ Import) and they were amusingly close (for a 1.3)...
On the road the differance seems to be after 3rd gear. The Supra just rips out a massive lead in 4th... Same as his old 911, the Starlet would keep with it till the end of 3rd... I wouldnt worry about some Starlet if i were you. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif
Whats the spec on your TT, cus my old man is planning to tune his after Christmas (if we can get the limiter sorted, we have supposedly had it removed but it still cuts in at 120mph. Any ideas?) and i have a basic idea of what we need (BPU) but confirmation would be great http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif
Oh and i plan on having a Supra in the near future too... Its the top Toyota in the tree and all of my MR2 Turbo/GT4/AE86 buddies want one too. Also, another great Toyota thing is that every one with Performance Toyota's seems to "spread the love" if you will. Ive had numerous MR2/GT4 drivers wave and stuff. Its great!
Anyway, very off topic, so i better shut my hole...
As for MR, i'd say its best for the track, but i dunno about the street. They swap ends too quickly!

About the speed limiter - I don't know exactly what was done to my car but now the ECU is fed a signal in MPH rather than KPH. My boost controller monitors the speed signal to the ECU, which is how I know. I presume this means it'll still be limited but to 180 mph instead of 180kph?? I'll probably never find out http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/wink.gif
BTW Blitz/HKS both do some sort of device for disabling it if you want to do it yourself.

HKS Hiper exhaust, Apex-i AVC-R Boost Controller, HKS SQV blow off valve, HKS Fuel Cut Defencer, HKS AFR, Blitz LM Spec intake, FGK high flow cat, non standard suspension...
On order - HKS FMIC, Trust 80 mm downpipe, HKS spark plugs, Cusco Reinforced Metal Clutch
I was thinkint the decimal point should have gone in front of the numbers, but that'll do http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/wink.gif
As for the speed delimiter, pop along to www.trlperformance.com (http://www.trlperformance.com)
That's a company created by a guy in our club who made his own delimiter, then started selling them to other members. Lots of people in out club have them, and I believe they're cheaper than the Blitz/HKS jobbies, and work better.
Alternatively, you can buy a UK-spec speedo head and swap it - but at £300 you probably don't want to.
Mine's a UK, and at what would be termed BPU. All you need for BPU is decat and boost controller. A filter is often listed, but offers no performance benefit. With those you're probably looking at the thick end of 330-350bhp with zero lag on a J-spec. Don't run the blowers over 18psi though otherwise you'll trash them.
The best place to look for tuning stuff is www.mkivsupra.net (http://www.mkivsupra.net) - loads of info there.

Thanks Keith, Papa... The car has a MPH Speedo conversion (not UK dials, but a nice enough conversion) so its not that thats stopping it.
Also, on another note, when the Limiter kicks in, the big "Hazard" light shows up on the rev counter, along with the ECU warning light... Now, i think that this is some kind of wiring error somewhere on the car... But who knows what or where... Doh!
We are also putting an Exhaust on the RZ along with the decat and boost controller, plus FMIC. Should go well http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif
UK spec Turbo's can boost higher than JDM ones right?

For the record my Punto actually belts out 0.058bhp.
The torque is......well.......limited.
But I bet I could get at least 300bhp if I put a white strip across the top of my windscreen.....
