Guys, help.

I'm using BT Internet to connect to the Evenings and Weekend Surftime package with BT (you know, the £5.99 a month thingy).

I need to know the outgoing mail settings for it cos I've looked on their website and it says "mail.btopenworld.com". Tried this and no joy. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif

Any suggestions??

Try "smtp.btopenworld.com" for outgoing - thats the format Lineone uses.

According to a google search it should be mail.btinternet.com but I tried to ping that address and got no reply.

Perhaps their smtp server is down/crashed?

They mailed me all the settings.....which are exactly the same as I input and it still don't work!!!

They don't know how to use Outlook (only express), so they couldn't really help.

I'm going to try and set it up in Outlook Express and see if that works.

Cheers guys. Keep any suggestions coming please.

I'm not familar with ICMP, please explain.

Is it something to do with restricting pinging to certain addresses?

The majority of hackers will target an IP range using a port scanner. They leave this running, scanning all or selected ports on an IP address or range or IP addies.

The PC which pinged you, will wiat for a responce or a timeout. If a responce is sent from your PC to the attackers PC, then they know that the IP address is allocated and active. Worst still if you aren't running something like Zonealarm, they will be able to work out which OS you have anbd also which software you have running on the machine, by analysing which ports are open, EG 80 and 440 implies HTTP and HTTPS. Quick visit to attrition.ord or similar and find a viable exploit (MS stuff) and bobs your uncle.

However, if you have ICMP echo responces disabled, you machine will not respond to the Ping and the port scanner will move onto the next address, hopefully... Phew

Hope this helps,

Do this before and after installing ZA http://www.grc.com

Try mail.btinternet.com and
post.btinternet.com

Both are up, ICMP echo responce is disabled, but I am getting 2 ip addresses.
