306 TD?

Sure you can easily get one in that price range with A/C. Not that slow either

Older Primara would be good I'd have thought

Or as a wierd one. Find an old (early - mid '90s) Rover 216 with all the kit.
The drive train and mechanicals are all Honda - so bullit proof  , they shift pretty damn well, are a good laugh to drive,
and they're also pretty economical :Plug:
How can you tell I used to own one

Any 4 pot mazda, 626 etc very reliable normally £2500 ish. Looking for economy then a 1.5 turbo diesel corsa. Theres absolutly loads of decent cars under 2500, go to a show room test drive what you want then go else where and buy it on the cheap.

Buy a £1500-2000 S13 and spend the rest on an LPG conversion :D

Fun, and economical, just not very reliable ;)

Avensis, latest ones are fantastic
Vectra & Astra DTi's are very good
Omega, very average car but the TD is a Bimmer engine so V.good.
The latest mondeo TDCi (I hate to say :annoyed: ) is a very very good car but prob out of price range.
Drove an awesome TD the other day... New Vectra V6TDi 6spd, mid range :smitten: & the latest Astra (Mk5) is awesome.
Erm... Rangie with LPG, SAAB with LPG... (All the best cars need LPG to be economical :wack: )

Must be able to get a good (sic) Ford Mundano for £2k with all the trimmings.

Might breakdown every day though.

How much would a LPG conversion cost on a S13 or S14.

Wouldn't recommend it as LPG is a 'hot' fuel.

I'd say a rover 420Di - up to 60mpg and 0 - 60 in a respectable 10 secs. For that kinda price you'd probably get a '99 model. Seriously considering this one myself as a commuter.

Another vote for Mondeo... :) I used to own one... Loved it... Very Comfortable, Quiet (Quietest Deisel i have EVER driven) and you can get a 98 Ghia TD for about £2.5K... VERY Economical too... Mine did about 45-55Mpg on motorway runs...

My S13 is doing about a third of that now...

Dumb question, but what do u mean by hot fuel??

Dumb question, but what do u mean by hot fuel??

Combustion temps are much higher when running it allegedly.......... not good on a turbo'd car already running high charge temps.

I guess you've never had a peugeot diesel then, the TD engine in the mondeo/escort/early focus is one of the worst diesel engines on the market for NVH (noise/vibration/harshness), plus they are one of the slowest, I should know, had several varients of each as a co car
The new tdci's are fantastic but over budget.
You'd be much better off with the 1.8 petrol, they still do almost 40mpg.

My vote would be for a 406 HDI with all the toys, can get one under 5 yrs old for less than £3k if you know where to look :) or an Omega with the 2.5 bmw diesel engine, or maybe a 525tds or a Merc 300D.

:)
