Got this plea for help from a friend...any ideas anyone?

"...i need to 'wash' the index.dat file so as not to get in trouble with the kind person whom is letting me use this laptop. But when i have tried (this uses WindowsNT) it wont let me...gives me a 'already in use by another programme' message.

I even went into DOS and tried there... same thing. Plus, there is a *ntindex.dat* file as well which i presume is one that goes onto some lan network or something. I clear out manually the temp i/n files, cookies and history but will every url visited will be in those .dat files?

I use my friends sign on and remote login to get into the company server - intranet - then go into the actual net from there. So there is a user file on c: drive that has history, temp i/n files, cookies and the illusive index.dat file. I am not used to WindowsNT at all plus alot of the options in various tool buttons are disabled"

Is the hard disk NTFS file system or FAT16?
If it is FAT16 then boot from a floppy disk to DOS and get rid of the unwanted file.
Simply changing to DOS from within NT is no good because that DOS is really only a concurrent subprocess so that files won't be unlocked. If it is NTFS you can't do that because DOS can't read NTFS disks.
Aternately you can try a reboot, select the VGA only option and see if the file is now unlocked (making sure all other programs are closed)

In properties of my computer, there is the User Profile section that allows you to delete the profile. This will clear all user stuff and on nexty logon will recreate. All your History and stuff will be deleted, as will favourites shortcuts etc. Just tell him that it crashed and you don't know what happened http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

Why not share all the porn you have downloaded with him? http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

Try history killer, internet cleanup, and any other such proggies.

Alternatively, go into the Internet Options and delete Temp internet files and clear the history.

1. Control panel, Internet options
2. IE,Tools, Internet options
3. IE, Help, Contents and Index, Options, Internet Options.
