Which is better? The Home Edition or the Pro Edition? I'm currently running Windows 98 SE, but it's started crashing even more often. (Conspiracy theories abound... http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif) I've heard that XP is much more stable, and am thinking about getting the upgrade CD and seeing if it's any better.

Also, best prices I've found so far are:

XP Home (UPGRADE) - £81.08 inc VAT

XP Pro (UPGRADE) - £158.62 inc VAT.

Supposedly I can get a £50 cash back on the Pro edition though through www.novatech.co.uk (http://www.novatech.co.uk)

Okay, I've been doing a little investigating around, and I've found out that all Win XP CD's need an activation code, which you get by registering the product. Now, say I wanted to use it on 2 computers, I've heard that you can't do this. Anyone know anything about this, is it true? More importantly, is there a way around it?

Not that I want to know of course, cause that'd be illegal, and we don't do anything illegal on this board... http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/wink.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/wink.gif

Okay, nobody else answer, I'll just keep talking to myself. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/tongue.gif

I've found the XP Pro for £123.73 inc VAT from www.overclockers.co.uk (http://www.overclockers.co.uk)

And I've also found out that you can use the upgrade version, to do a clean install. Simply format the computer, insert the upgrade CD, start the installation process, and then the computer will ask for the previous Win CD to be inserted, just to check that you actually have the CD, it doesn't have to carry across the old info.

Taken from another site about XP.for one thing, a windows cd must only be installed on ONE computer at a time, this is the first time microsoft have added copy potection to their operating systems. you cannot register the software because your friend has registered that cd to his computer. you will need to buy your own copy and register that.
micosoft has done this because like you have done, people will get one windows cd and make a copy give it to their friends and their friends freinds ect and in a few months there could be hundreds of copys of that one cd floating around!
the product activation must take place within 14 days or windows will not do anything. i say good fo microsoft for protecting their product, as i heard a few days ago of factorys in china pumping out counterfit microsoft o/s's !

2 Versions of Windows XP that do not require activation are.....

OEM Install.
Corporate License.
Of course, there are also some cracked versions that are available on the net.. Not that I know wherer they are of course.

As for the version you require, depends on what you are using it for. If memory serves me correctly, Professional version has better networking.

From what I've read.
When you install XP it takes some of the code from the disc and also some of the code from the hardware on your computer, you then have to register within a certain time and the activation code is sent to you via the net??

However the code will only work if the code tallies with what it sent to microsoft (hardware ...etc.)

However I could be making it up as I go along....... http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

Spooky don't do it, it really is sh!te.

And FFS don't pay for it, stick with 2000 pro, it's far faster and more stable.

Or download Red Hat 7.2 and be really happy like me. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

I'm currently using Win98SE, and believe it or not, it's been crashing more and more often this last week. Haven't done anything to it, so don't know why.

I came across a non purchased IYKWIM copy of WinME, but it crashed all three computers that I put it on. Didn't think it was a very stable system at all.

Oh well, I'll wait and see what happens, I've just updated this version online, and I'll see if that helps any.

Win98SE is running extremely badly on the first machine so upgraded it to Win2k like the other PC.
Happy with Win2k on both machines here, although I do have Windows.XP.Pro.Corporate. if there ever becomes a reason for upgrading.

If you must go for XP then don't bother with the Professional edition, the home edition is more than adequate for most people.

I have found XP stable (for the last two weeks anyway). It's just fancy graphics with a few new toys, also once again they've moved all the configuration items so you spend ages looking for them.

Jezz_S13 > I disagree with you saying it's more ****e (have you actually used it?), it's just as ****e as previous Windows versions.

But, if you do want an excellent stable OS I'd also recommend Redhat 7.2. It's the best OS I've ever worked with, and I've worked with a lot!!!

Unfortunately you can't play Ballistics, or a few other recent choice games on Linux :\

Unless WINE does some decent DirectX emulation .. ?

Bean,

I haven't used it no, not personally on my desktop certainly don't plan too either, but we have been evaluating it for a while now at Uni and it is decided that it is slow and unstable.
Win 2K Pro is pretty good as windows goes, by far the best so far, I like you prefer Linux/Solaris and that is what my job is, but as for productivity Windows will always be on top whether you like it or not. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif

I have to admit that I have two desktop machines at work, one for email web surfing (Win 2K), that'll be bagpuss) and the one I do my work on (SuSE 7.1, this is yaffle). Microsoft ought to release IE for linux because it is a very good product and netscape is crap.

have a bit of a look here

I have been running Windows XP Corporate Pro Edition for about a month or so now and it is far from slow if you have a decent processor and plenty of ram, oh and don't forget to have plenty of hard drive space ( it needs about 1.5Gb of space!!!!!)
Only thing i don't like is the lack of driver support which isn't a fault of Windows itself.
Antmcp is correct in saying that the Corporate and OEM versions don't need activating.
Also Spooky, if you do decide to go to XP then make sure you don't do any major upgrade on your computer or you will have to get yet another activation code from Microsoft!!!!

Hope this helps.
