I want one!

800mhz G4, blah blah blah....

Under $1100 too.

It almost works as a laptop, and will keep your legs warm to boot! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/tongue.gif

Go on. Throw out your bulky, obselete, Microsoft infested, waste of space, PC of shyt, and join the future of the computer!

When I bought my i-Mac, they had the flat screens, and the G4 cube on demo. I'd seen pictures of them, but they don't do justice. The whole set-up is so ethereally transparent and seems to blend in with anything.....

Oh, I'm sorry, I've just come.

Wake up and smell the coffee mate, PC's are way behind macintosh in terms of ....well everything. I have both a top spec PC and G4 mac and there is no way i would trust the PC for anything other than to play games. Every couple of weeks it's always the same "Windows cannot find blah blah.dll" or some crap and i lose all my files. As for the quoted 1000mhz speed.....its still slower at performing tasks than my 500mhz G4 cube!!!

But for a Enterprise Server..... A Mac is a joke.

Backup software is an after thought. Remote management? Pah!

You don't have to run windoze on a PC either, isn't the lastest macOS Linux based?

Didn't they withdraw the Cube aswell?

I do like the mac speakers that Elton John has on his Royal mail advert though.

I won't (further) contribute because I've already been down this road.

I've made my choice, and I stand by it. I would be less than half as productive as I am on a mac and if you give me a Win2k box and a Mac OX 9 / 10 box, I'll prove it too.

Heh heh,

I own 4 machines and administer around 1000, and if a windows machine is set up right (ie NT4 SP6a or 2000 SP2) it is better, more reliable than any of my unix/linux boxes and easier to fix...

Contentious I know, but Apple try to wrap you in cotton wool, and Linux is made by hobbyests, and Unix is soo 90's.. That only leaves MS, who are you have to admit sorting their acts out.

Anyhow I don't give a monkeys, if I want to stare at something pretty I'll stick to girls or my car :-)

GNAHHH!!! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/eek.gif
Dunno about administrating but if you are using them for anything industrial (Im a software test engineer) Windows is utterly shyte. Its so obtuse about doing things.
Example - I make software builds daily, and need a number to identify them, so I use the date - today is 020110 for instance.
In linux it took approximately ten secoinds to get the date in this format. In Windows it took me a day and a half and a perl script. And thats just the start ............
As jezz and I were agreeing the other day - if you want to do anything its unix 1 minute, Windows 1 day http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif

Had a MAC Server installed (OS9 because software support for OS10 - Decent backup software..... is non existent)

Fecking thing crashed after 2 days. This was a 22K big feck off raid storage MAC G4 Server. They can't even make the feckers rack mountable, so whole thing sits there taking up half a 42U rack.

My NT Based Notes servers never crash, neither does my Linux based clock (GPS powered NTP server) But the Mac is a joke.

Good to use as a CD player when working in the server room though http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

Most reliable server we ever had was a Compaq Prosignia 500 running Oracle 7 on NT4. Was so reliable, we forgot the thing was there. Used to run our old Quetzal Helpdesk Software (Uggh) before we moved to a Notes solution.

Total uptime between reboots? 28months! Can anyone beat that?

Maybe, I'll have a trawl around our machine room esp the HP's tomorrow, I know what you mean about forgetting they are there.
If they die it's cos either there has been a power cut and the UPS didn't work (has been known http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/redface.gif) or because one of their ancient drives has finally died. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif

Novell servers are crap too, we got about 90 of them, they get rebooted regularly.

The Sun, HP, and Linux boxes just work and that's that.

Mac are good for another thing than CD players, that's quality colour representation. Not good enough reason to get one though, but a few of the web designers at work have a mac to check the colours but do the work on Win2000/PC.

Heard a good story about a company in US who wanted to upgrade their Netware 3 server. Apparently the consultant who went in to do the upgrade couldn't find the server and no one in the company could remember where it was.

They eventually found it by tracing the network cables through a wall and found that the server had been bricked up, but STILL CONTINUED TO RUN.

Might as well put my 10p in...

I like Macs.. if your server solution was a G4 based one, then you CAN rack mount them with a special cradal. Takes up quite a bit though.. 5-6U? Anyway, I'm very happy with Win2k server / pro but I cant figure out why it has to reboot after nearly every install? Really annoying. A Mac never needs this! I have never had a hardware fault with a Mac either, but then again, they are hardly state of the art now.

Talking of a Mac whoppin' a PC.. I think you'll find a PC running DDR, 2Ghz processor, 7200rpm UDMA133 HD blah blah would CREAM any Mac (and @ half the price!). Only (and Apple love doing this)way a Mac would 'look competitive' is by comparing something gay like Photoshop - which was originally written for Mac), any doing something which would use its RISC chip set to the max.

Anyway, Macs are coming of age now OSX is out, only had a quick play but VERY impressed! Shame apple wont port that damn OS to x86, then I know what MY fileserver will be running http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/wink.gif

I like the new Imac.. a lot! the old ones (IMHO) were fecking ****. I run our mail server on one, and has to be restarted daily due to locking. Do they run hot or what?! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif

Err anyway.. off to bed.. Zzzzzzz

Any computer is rack mountable if you put a shelf in. You can't put them on the side, because the CD Drive doesn't have the lugs to stop the CD falling out.

Used to Multi Processor Compaq servers, with Gigs of Ram and 15K Ultra160 SCSI Drives. The new Alphaservers are nice as well.

Any entry level 1GHz PC will cream a Mac for Photoshop.

Want OSX, get Linux.

Got linux (RedHat 7.2) - confusing as arse! Why can they just sort out setup GUIs before faffing around with this and that?! All I wanna do is click on nice designerey buttons to configure my ethernet, video, sharing blah blah without spending a day typing in SMB.conf or searching for the damn GUI!

CDROM dont have lugs? So swap it for a standard one in another machine?! Its only IDE nowadays!

Only Compaq server I get to play with are a few Compaq 370Rs with 6 15k HD, GB memory, 1000UKP RAID controller, 1GB Ethernet.... blah blah. Goes like stink, but I have a little Gigabyte SR101 1U server with 2x 1GHz CPUs and 2GB RAM!! 1U!!! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif Fast as ferk!

ok ok im still up - iMac = mail server as you look around the office desperate to find a spare machine... and there she is.. a 500Mhz iMac with 128MB ram.. 15GB HDD.. ahh bless..

Quite humourous I thought, but more secure than a Microshaft server.

Slapped OS 9.2 on it yesterday.. stable now! YEAH! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif And pretty.. (****)

I'm not sure what you mean by more secure than an MS server - it's easy to make a box secure.

Why not OS X ?

Red Hat 7.2, is ace. Admittedly took us a while to work out why all the net services didn't work by default. /etc/xinetd.d/ then set the disables to 'no' then /etc/init.d/xinetd restart
Use SWAT to configure SaMBa. It's web based thing. http://localhost:901

Xerox were stupid enough to let Steve Jobbs have the Windows OS then Gates nicked it off Steve(Apple) but it goes alot deeper than that!

I want one! When green is in abundance I will have the new iMAC...not only that but a G4 800mhz processor that can trounce a Pentium or AMD equivalent gets my vote!

Check this page out and turn to the dark side...LOL

muhahaha bringing this up-to-date http://www.tech-report.com/reviews/2002q1/duron-1.3ghz/index.x?pg=2
Curious on what people make of this - AMD made a system for $600 (£420~) that gets you a 1.3ghz Duron chip, 128mb ram, a Geforce2 MX vid card, and the other usual bits and pieces.
