Thumping automatic

The Mrs' Primera is an automatic and recently it has started to change gear pretty violently. I remember something on here a while ago about removing a plug or something that did something like this. Could this be the prob or something else?

when was the oil in the gearbox changed last?

maybe try changing or topping up the transmission fluid

Well on the s14* there is a small metal box bolted to the inside wing near the air filter, that what is used on the Auto to contorl the harshness of the gear change.

First thing I'd do is change the tranny fluid (and filter if it has one).
