View Full Version : Read any good books recently?
What are people reading, if anything, and what would you recommend?
Since commuting to work I now have 1.5 hours of train boredom to contecnd with, so I decided to start reading again. Have read some fantastic books recently and was wondering if anyone has anything to recommend?
Have recently read Otherland and Memory, Sorrow and Thorn (Both by Tad Williams) and am currently reading Shadow of the Torturer by Gene Wolfe. Am in a Fanasy mood at the mo..... But am willing to read something different if someone really reocmmends something.
Not expecting many results on this one, I must admit...
John.
Am reading Snow white and the seven samurai by Tom Holt at the moment.
Overtime and Paint your Dragon by him are also good.
Robert Rankin's Brentford trilogy's not bad (even if there are 4 books in it).
And if you've not read them the Dirk Gently books (Dirk Gently's holistic detective agency and Long dark teatime of the soul) by Douglas Adams are worth a read.

If you have not previously read them
Iain M Banks Sci Fi novels, and the publications of his straight fiction alter ego Iain Banks, are all truly a joy to read.

I love the Hitchhikers Guide, and have read LOTR (Seeing it tonight too http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif).
Have got a Tom HOlt book, the one about the Dragons and the weather. Can't remember what it's caleld though...
I haven't read any Iain Banks, will check him out. Have heard good things about him.
Tried reading the Long Dark Teatime... when I was a wee nipper, but couldn't get on with it. May give it another go though.
Do want to read Mr nuice though, for obvious reasons. Have read many an excerpt of it http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif
On a similar subject, Doc, you might enjoy Storming Heaven by Jay Stevens, and The Doors of Perception: Heaven and Hell by Aldous Huxley.
Cheers guys, keep em commin'...

You must read this book... I told a freind of mine to get it for the flight to Oz, so he went out and got it. I got an E-Mail from him not so long ago, telling me that he had to buy the rest of the series, they are that good... I have never recomended a book as highly as i do this one:
The Magician by Raymond E. Fiest
Seriously, its awesome.

John,
DOCWRA mentioned Mr Nice by Howard Marks, I'm just finishing reading it again so you can borrow it next time you pop down!

Just started reading Essex Boys by Bernard O'Mahoney. Abaht Essex drug trade innit!! Its OK so far.
I've just finished "the wrong boy" by Willie
Rushton, Which is well worth a read. Magician and the rest of the serpant war/rift war series are good. And if you like serious sci-fi then try neverness by davic zindell. But Zen and the art... is so over rated.
Hi John!
Iain Banks was already mentioned. I've read just four of his books by now and liked "The crow road" and "walking on glass" best.
The Dirk Gently novels by Douglas Adams are twio of my favourites. But the best book he ever wrote was "last chance to see" - a journey to find some rare species of animals.
Hmmm... what about Nick Hornby? He's quite popular in GB, I guess. Try "high fidelity".

Yes! Raymond Feist
Fantastic
his other stuff Daughter of the Empire trilogy

Try Robert Jordan "Wheel of time"

Jordan, Feist, Eddings are all good.
Into David Gemmell and L.E.Modesitt Jr at the moment for fantasy stuff and you cannot beat Peter F. Hamilton for scifi.

You could try 'the chronicles of Thomas Covenant'
Makes Lord of the Rings look like a kids story...... http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/wink.gif(No offence intended)
I'm a constant dipper-into The Lord of the Rings. Must have read it about two dozen times since about 1973ish. Onto my third set (first fell apart, dog chewed second).
At the mo reading auto biog of Don McCullin, the war photographer: "Unreasonable Behaviour". Also reading George Ivanovich Gurdieff's "Meetings with Remarkable Men" - a combination of 1930's travelogue, philosophy and theology, best consumed sober and then considered later with the help of alcohol and quasi-illegal substances.
And just finished reading "Timequake" by Kurt Vonnegut. Fabulously thoughtful and funny sci-fi.

Peter F hamilton, stunning sci-fi series starting with "Reality Dysfunction", along the same lines is Stephen Donaldson the gap series starting with "The Real Story". Ian M banks culture novels are very good "the use of weapons" being my favorite. His other novels are very good but can be a bit dark. If you can get them, "The Darksword Trilogy" by margret wise & tracey hickman, dungeons and dragons type fantasy. In fact the dragonlance chronocles by the same authours aren't to bad either, a bit childish perhaps but enjoyable none the less. Terry Prachet is very good, again biased towards younger readers but a bloody good laugh anyway. I could go on but that's enough for now.

"You could try 'the chronicles of Thomas Covenant'

Even though TLOTR is essentially a kids story it will probably always be my favourite book http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif.
Other great books I have read recently are the Flashman novels by George MacDonald Fraser http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif Funniest books I have ever read and excellent in there own right.
More serious but still superb are the Patrick O'Brian Aubrey and Maturin novels if you are into Historical fiction (Napoleonic).
Anything by Robert Ludlum for spy thrillers and Wilbur Smith for adventure in SA http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif.

Doc,
I am quick suprised by this too, was expecting abuse to be hurled at me for even mentioning the R word. I appear to have been mistaken though.

This one looks jolly good. here's a quote from someone that read it:
"But then I was sitting at my computer in the nude late one night, spamming usenet forums, and unthinkingly began the rhythmic clenching and unclenching. Suddenly, like an enraged schnauzer, my anus tore a chunk of the seat cushion out of my chair. And swallowed it"
Ahem

One severely fecked up book.
I would recommend "Bag of bones" by Stephen King and "Filth" by Irvine Welsh as two of my recent faves. I am reading "The true history of the Kelly gang" by Peter Carey at the moment and it's brill! Oh yeah "Take it like a man" by Boy George is a really good read if you remember all that eighties stuff. It shows the other side of the Culture Club phenomenon warts and all!

As far as horror goes, no one beats the Poe!
Edgar Allen Poe is great, and responsible for some truely horrifying stories :-)
Recently though I have been reading Captain Corellis Mandolin, I might even watch the film soon. Top book.
