View Full Version : Sorry, techie question!
Does anyone know of a free/available smtp server I can use to authenticate my work email from externally?
I can't setup our firewall to authenticate my ISP's assigned IP address becuase it's dynamic (not constant).
Does anyone even know what I'm babbling on about? http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif
I really need a solution tonight becasue I wan't to send an email to the US using my work account!!!
I used to use mail.btconnet.com but that no longer works http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif

This is a tricky one Bean because for a server to allow you to do this (it's called relaying) it means that anyone can send a message using a ficticious email address for the said server.
Because there are so many people that like to send such email most Net Admins make it impossible for people to do it. We restrict on IP address here, ie so if email wasn't sent from a swansea IP address then our mail server bounces it back and refuses to send it. There are loads of other ways though to block though.
Can you not just use another email account and set the reply to address to your work's one?
Jezz.

I realise that most smtp servers will be restricted to their subnets/networks, I just wondered of anyone knew of any open smtp servers. Not for malicious reason obviously http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif
"Can you not just use another email account and set the reply to address to your work's one?" Can't see how that would work with the appearance that I'd read and responded using my work email account?
If I work out a work to grant my isp's dynamic ip address to our firewall I'd be sorted.
Damn!!! I resent being such a techie!!! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

Found a solution.
Apparently you can use the smtp of your ISP dialup connection. When I go home I'm going to try setting my smtp server to smtp.ntlworld.com.
Should be able to send as well as receive work email from outside work then.

Hmmm I was gonna say that. I have an easily aco**** for home richard@rtbsystems.co.uk but NTL do not allow you to connect to this SMTP server! So all I had to do is send all outgoing mail to SMTP.ntlworld.com instead.
Sorted.. Sorry, didn't understand what you were asking. Was considering opening a mail account here for ya, but just too damn lazy! http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/wink.gif
