For 1 litre of petrol, the petrol companies currently make 3.4p / litre profit.
When you pay 89.9p / litre, 86.5p of that is cost (supply, tax, duty etc). supply+duty +vat on both.
The supply cost from the refineries currently runs at 19.7p / litre.
So at 0% tax, the cost is 19.7p. At 100% tax, the cost is 39.4p.
At 200% tax, the cost is 59.1p.
At 300% tax, the cost is 78.8p.
At 340% tax, the cost is 86.5p - add on the 3.4p profit margin and there's your 89.9p litre.
:censored:
I saw these stats at the time of the fuel crisis a few years back.
Government = :censored:s

I don't even think they spend all the road tax on roads.

They aren't obliged to spend any of the road tax on roads. When I went to France at the end of last week petrol was on average 79.9ppl near me. Came back yesterday and it now 83.9ppl :annoyed: :annoyed: :annoyed:

LOL you can blame the yanks (and us by proxy) for that. :D
Just think how much money they make on petrol though - if that tax was removed surely all of our services etc would suffer terribly. or am I being hugely naive? ;)

I read something like £40Bn/year is paid in tax by drivers (road tax, petrol etc) but only £6Bn is spent on the roads/tranport :indiff:
Bit like the tax on fags!
If everyone stopped smoking the NHS would probably crumble away quicker than it already is.
Not saying that the NHS is run off fag tax of course! :D ;)

they should add the 300% tax from fuel onto fags, and leave us with cheapo petrol...
be fair then :indiff:
smoking is a horrid habbit anyway
Someone at work was telling me that they're warning of it going up to about 95p / litre for normal unleaded in the next few months and anothe fuel strike is imminent.
This is getting fcuking stupid now ... :indiff:

Tax on tobacco is already running at several hundred per cent - there will always be a good return on smokes because it's not a habit, it's an addiction.
If the tax on smokes was increased massively the already prevalant tobacco smuggling culture would grow even greater.
I smoke, but I've hardly bought a pack of cigarettes in this country for the last few years due to the cost of European travel and cigarettes costing sod-all in the rest of Europe.
I can't do that with Optimax, unfortunately. :annoyed:

Although fuel is cheaper in france, I alway go over empty and fill up there on Total Super Premier 98 or SHELL FORMULATED SUPERPLUS 98 as soon as I pop out the tunnel.

Funny how the fuel is still cheaper over there, even though the French do not have their own oil and have scrapped raod tax in favour of increasing tax on fuel. Not trying to imply that our government consists of a bunch of cheating, money grabbing, easy target bastards or anything though :indiff:

But the tolls go to the private companies that maintain the motorways. They also serve to keep many of the lorries off and apart from Bank Holidays, traffic jams are very very rare.

Yes, the govt need the money from somewhere, but lets face it, drivers are the easiest targets (including for charging when they 'speed' as opposed to catching a burglar who has no money to pay a fine). I'd rather they increased tax on cigarettes and alcoholic drinks. But then I don't smoke or drink much whereas I HAVE to drive to work...
I think there should be a tax on car weight. ie 4x4s and MPVs which are slow and large (creating a lot of congestion) and usually only have 1 person in them despite having 7 seats available :annoyed:
Still, New Labia will probably end up in government again, cos nobody does anything about it (lorry blockades annoy the public not the government who have a stockpile of petrol  )

I preffer to think of it as the country being a pussy and labour being a tomcat phalus... since they appear to be impossible to get out of office. Everything seems to glance off bliar.
I especialy hate lies about inflation - I don't think the economy is doing NEARLY so well as labour keeps touting - and costs are up up up.
