View Full Version : Graphicscard/monitor help please :)
Just installed a 2nd 21" monitor on my 9800pro card. The card has 2 outputs, 1 VGA and one DVI. This one is on the DVI output using a DVI-VGA converter.
Running both at 1280x960, but I can't get the 2nd monitor to run at any reresh other than 60Hz? It reports it as 100Hz or whatever I set it to in the display properties, but it's visibly flickery and the OSD shows 60hz.
Any ideas? Is this a limitation of my card?
Is it the case that even though they ship the card with a DVI-VGA converter and it supports dual displays that the DVI port can only output 60Hz because that's what LCDs take?

It shouldn't be a limitation of the DVI I'd think
My Geforce4 has twin DVI outputs, and numerous adapters to plug whatever I want into them.
I can happily run my monitor at up to 120MHz IIRC (not at high res tho!)
It's more than happy at my normal refresh of 85 MHz
I think you mean Hz, not MHz :)

I think its because you are using a DVI-VGA converter. Basically on a DVI cable you have DVI & also 4 pins of RGB signal. A converter takes the RGB and whacks it into a VGA signal. (ie. it doesn't convert the DVI at all) RGB is being sent sent at 60hz. Windows is reporting the DVI signal of 100hz.
I could be wrong but I think you may need a DVI monitor to get higher hz OR maybe their is some way to change the RGB output?
I find it hard to believe they'd ship a card with a converter only capable of displaying an eye-watering 60hz, will delve deeper - onto the techie forums!! ;)
Ah ha, sussed it. In the "monitors" ati tab under advanced it had my 2nd monitor as incapable of displaying anything over 60hz. Now have it running at a nice 85hz (wont do 100 sadly).
