I know a lot of folks are insured through Tesco but has anyone had to make a claim through them. If so are they any good?

Reason for asking is they beat my renewal quote by £230 and I'm just waiting for the catch

I got my insurance from Tesco. Haven't had any direct experience of having to claim from them, but their policy is underwriten by Privilege, who I'd been insured with when I had my previous 200. I had to make a claim from them and it was all done very efficiently, so I guess you can expect similar treatment.

What was the quote?

That is a very important question, JB.

It's no good if they're crap at claim time.

That's why I am VERY impressed with D/Line. Their claims dept. are absoiltely knobtastic (mate)!

So, hope much is your quote (bearing in mind I am of a similar vintage to yourself!)?

I was under the impression that Direct Line and Tesco are (or at least were) one and the same
I found this very interesting, coz Direct Line (who I was with) were gonna charge me £250 more for renewal than Tesco would have done afresh ...........

Pretty sure they are the same, the web site is identical apart from colour and they are both connected to Royal Bank of Scotland (who own Direct Line).

According to the small print on the web site

"Tesco Personal Finance Limited is a joint venture between The Royal Bank of Scotland plc and Tesco PLC"

I've just made a small claim with Tesco when some bugger decided to reverse into my door whilst i was at work...

Basically Tesco's were very VERY slow to pay up. It took 2 weeks from when I left the car at the bodyshop before they authorised the repair costs, then the bastards forgot to fax the garage with an authorisation letter. All this for a £400 claim. Also Tescos do not provide a hire car whilst the work is carried out...

The bodyshop told me that when the estimator arrived at the garage to examine the car he was known from Direct Line!!!

When i took the insurance out in May my premium was £200 cheaper than direct line, but next year i will consider returning to DL as at least you get a car whilst yours is in the garage.

I'm currently in the middle of a total loss claim with Tesco's, and thus far, their performance is no better/worse than the major players (having myself worked for one for six years).

So long as you know how to play the game, they're suitably efficient, but I'll reserve final judgement until they've replaced the car.

Previous comments about lack of a courtesy car are, however, very pertinent. My smash was two and a half weeks ago, so I've bought a banger from the auctions to tide me over. When the claim's settled, I'll just throw it back in the auctions.
