You may (probably not) remember me advertising my sisters Golf in the for sale section, and around the internet.

I got some mail from a guy in the US - Dr. Green

I'll send you a cheque for £5000, take £1500 for car, some to the guy who will collect it and take it to the boat, and send the rest back to me
Yeah Right !!

So I humoured him ... if the cheque clears before the car is sold its yours

Several e-mails a week later, the car is sold, he said the cheque has been sent ... could I cash it and transfer the cash back to him ....

>>Yeah whatever, send me a cheque I'll cash it, send it to you once its
>cleared, don’t even think of asking for my bank details ...hmmmm there
>goes a flying pig. At least these mails make me laugh - thanks for
>cheering my day up. Kev
>

and then !!!

Can this guy be genuine??
Surely there has to be some dodgeyness?
Money Laundering?

I'm going to present it to my bank BUT FULLY EXPLAINING the situation so that if there is dodgeyness I'm all up-front and honest.

Advice/Comments Very Welcome

wouldnt you normally just cancel the cheque?
yeah, sure it will be dodgey .. but its a bankers draft from EBS ?
I googled ..

It's a scam. Usually works along the lines of... Sell something for £10, sends a cheque for £20. Says Whoops cash it anyway and send the £10 back. You do this, cheque bounces, you lose £10 X 100s.

Remember kids Cheques Clear in TEN days

THROW AWAY

Standard scam - the money can even clear, but later the fraud is found out and the money taken back, leaving you with no car and no money. Worse, they've also taken £xxxx of your money.

Before someone says that 'It's cleared, the money is yours' - no it's not. In the same way that when you buy a stolen car and it's later traced it is not yours.

It does sound like a con. I would contact EBS and see if the bank chq is legit or not before you try and cash it.

It seems there are a lot of scams like this going on at the mo.
My brother works for HSBC and is coming across this sort of thing fairly often.

I'd say that's what is technically refered to as a 'dodgy' check. :wack:
Cash it and you'll probably be the one who looses out :(

Same thing happened to a mate of mine who was selling his FD3S RX7.

Turns out the cheque was false...

Fortunately for him, it was the bank who notified him of this.

As stated, I was sure it was dodgey .. just wasnt sure exactly how it would "work", now I see, even if you wait for it to clear the fraud can be found out after.

And as said, the car has been sold.

Aye tis a standard scam this one.... the cheque will clear... you hand over the goods + cash... a little while later, cheque turns out to be stolen, and the funds are removed from your account, leaving you royally ass-raped.

Id get in touch with the bank that issued the cheque. If you can get something in writing from them saying they will honour the cheque, then you are in the clear
