Some people have deep problems, life can be too taxing for some, shame.

Takes a lot of care and careful help, to find a cure. :(

Bruce Springsteen fanatic?? :wack:

Maybe he'll be running to Darlington County next, and seeing his mate Wayne handcuffed to the bumper of a state troopers car :wack: :wack:

Why was he in court - surely you can set fire to yourself if you want??

my ex used to cut herself because she got bullied at school for having developed earlier than most... she said it made her feel much better after, but she didn't know why?

fire is a bit more extreme though!

Some decent psychiatric care sounds to be in order.

sounds like a personality disorder. basically he's probably had a crap life (abused as a child etc) and developed this sort of behaviour. (somebody put the personality quiz up a while ago, and this is basically an extreme personality.)

JB suggested psych help but unfortunately its very unlikely that this will help. the guys not actually ill, he has just developed a very fcuked up personality and it's very difficult for a leopard to change its spots.

the self harm thing is a way of dealing with the pain inside - if you hurt on the outside you can forget about how you feel on the inside. unfortunately you develop a tolerance and end up doing more and more extreme things to yourself.

he doesn't actually want to kill himself but sadly one of these days he'll probably manage it. i feel sorry for him. :( met lots of people like this in my last job

Who said Doctors have god complex :D

I usually end up putting out the people who set themselves on fire and have a small modicum of faith in the fact that people can change and it is not my job to prejudge their future life!

we can't

sorry but this is the simple fact. we try fcuking hard, but this sort of problem has a really poor prognosis. from an early age this guy has been in an abused-abuser relationship and this is the model which all his future relationships take. this includes his relationship with psychiatric services

the only thing that can change this guy is himself, and he has to take responsibility for his own actions and sort himself out. but that probably won't happen.

in this country we really try hard for these people, honest, but so many times they are beyond help and its so sad.

i'm speaking from experience - i used to deal with this sort of patient on a day-to day basis, and you'd offer them so much support but then a few hours later they'd be found in their room with a makeshift noose around their neck (incidentally they'd always be found before they actually did anything serious) then you turn round and say if you don't wise up then you can fcuk off and you become the abuser. In the 'safe' environment of a psychiatric ward they actually try more dangerous acts of self-harm

its really fcuking complicated and incredibly difficult.

they are fcuked up :(

Have to agree with dr bob, I have worked in mental health for longer than I care to remember. As much as we try and want to help, there is only so much we can do with a personality disorder. Its very hard to deal with on a personal level as well, cause as much as you want to help there's sweet fa you can do. :(
Its so sad, lots of people completely screwed up by so called parents and carers......responsible adults........ :annoyed:

Maybe you are not there for the 100's who succeed in killing themselves but for the one who doesn't!
