View Full Version : who genuinely enjoys their job?
and if so, what do you do? :)
I'm currently in an IT support management role working for a large US led software company. Although I work with a real nice bunch of people and the pay is pretty good, I'm totally fed up of working for a faceless corporation and am looking for a change. Any suggestions of work that would actually make me want to get out of bed in the morning?
cheers :)
I love my job  :D :D :D
I do bugger all and I do it damn well  :smitten:

I hate my job. Well its OK sometimes. When the b1tch from hell isn't in :indiff:
Could be worse though. I could have one of those proper hard working IT jobs like Keith, Little jim et al have  :D
No I hate my job, browsing the internet all day has left me with a ridiculously strong prescription for glasses :p
S'all the text you see ;)
I work part time at Halfords, pmsl. And i love it. Perfect for me while at uni, ok pay, flexible hours/overtime/do sod all work. Prob not what your after tho :wack: :p
See we would try to get you a job martin but you would only end up doing some work and make us look bad :p
I love my job. I run a centre for young people who our government lovingly term as "disaffected". Some of them are little buggers, but sometimes we make a difference and thats when its all worthwhile. We all work bloody hard and its often stressfull but oh yes! we get paid for taking them camping, caving, canoeing, bowling, etc.

As you know, generally I do. however, I do have days where I wonder why the f*ck I do it! (e.g. had a bloke threaten to stab me today, then assult a female teacher). I simply don't earn enough to deal with this shit, infact I simply don't earn enough to do the other area's of my job, but for some reason it takes the threat of death for me to realize that it's just not right..
Like we've said many times dude, we just need an idea for a business venture.. simple ay :indiff:
I'm having such a shite week at work that I actually typed out my resignation today. :(

Stupid hours.. come home do other things ;), go to bed.. get up and start again. Quite often been known to do nearly 20hour days. So yeah guess I love it :smitten: except the other day when... :censored:

Does everyone who owns a 200 work in IT....Hmmm...
I work with people recovering from mental health problems, I teach craft, and the use of computers.....Ohh nooo IT aswell.... :)
Can be a very rewarding job other times stressful, but its not hard work, and to see someone start talking and laughing who would not speak before is worth its wait in gold......you kinda think.....'Thats why I do this'
My wife is nurse (RGN) and she loves her work......but the stories she tells.....amazing....you would think she was working in mental health instead of a general hospital. Like the bloke who had a nice little camp fire in the middle of the night in his room........burning his underpants... :wack:

I'm less than enamoured with my job and feel totally unfulfilled with it. :(
But I don't know how to do anything else, so keep plugging away all day for not much money (still ok'ish wages for the job, though) and the vain hope that inspiration will strike me one day. That, or I drop dead of boredom and/or the sheer frustration of people that won't stop ringing my phone and actually let me get on with something for more than 2 minutes at a time. :annoyed:
I want to emigrate or go on holiday for a very long time. I've worked constantly for 8 years and it bores me
I doubt very many people enjoy their jobs, I don't hate mine, sometimes it's great, but I don't like having to do 20 things at once

there's always the simplest one: just ask yourself: 'what are other people doing which I can do better ?' helps you start looking at how business works, too ;) that way you get to nick other people's business ideas and improve on them - age old tactic.
that said, I haven't tried anything yet... been wageslaving for the last few years. I plan on changing that soon, so I'm off looking for mentors and thinking about exactly what it is I want to do :smash:

I don't love my job but I do like it. Differant things to do day in day out, different people. Not boring  But the stress leaves me in an awful state. Difficult clients, clients who change their minds, clients who wont listen. One woman I do work for is awful, I tell her i havent the time etc etc and she doesnt listen. Next week she'll phone me saying have you done this or that
She really fcuks me off but I have to put up with it as I get a fair amount of work from her.
My days are also laden with not having enough time and working on your own it can be so easy to lose your motivation sometimes, it also can be very boring. But on the whole its good

To be able to actually open a business of your own, you will need the ability to ignore other people around you, especially those who use logical arguments to get you to re-think. These are usually people who claim to have your best interests at heart :p
Starting your own business should be a certifiable condition ;) as you have to be slightly mad to consider it!
Once you take the plunge, only you can make it work. Only you will be to blame if it fails.
Having said that, even though I make far less money now than I did when I worked for someone else, I wouldn't change my job for the world :D

I am a painter and decorator by trade. I do a good job, clean and tidy etc but sometimes the work just isnt there. I get all my work by word of mouth but if people dont want stuff done you cant do it. Also the first 18 months of business nearly went belly up coz one client owed me a fortune and wouldnt pay. Had to threaten them with court in the end before they paid. I couldnt afford to lose a big client like that but I also couldnt afford to wait six months for my money. If my family hadnt helped me out I wouldnt still be working for myself. I am still getting over that financially as they made me go into debt to keep things running. I did everything possible to keep them happy whilst still asking for my money. Catch 22. Fcuked if you lose the client, fcuked if they dont pay up. How can a situation like that be controlled when youve only just started up in business, they know you need the work and because they hold the whip hand can afford to make you wait for your money as they know you wont push too hard and upset them and fall out

First thing I ever learnt about business was if you can't keep yourself for the first two years, you'll be flying by the seat of your pants :D
I had no savings whatsoever, so I knew that I could go belly up at any time.
Our customers are fickle  so we have to be inventive, keep thinking out of the box, try other things/other ways to get customers. There's always something you can do. I find that a bit of lateral thinking works wonders.
I didn't say it was easy  if it was everyone would be in there, competing with us. They aren't. It's just us fools

I've always enjoyed my work to some extent, but this latest job I have is very technically challenging, great company, great people, great boss.
Downsides are its £7K/year less than my last job and I'm forced to drive 110miles/day minimum commuting.
I work in a lab developing test methods for cosmetic products for a large international company Lynx/Axe/Sure/Rexona/Dove/Impulse/VIC. Its a global job doing a lot of work for South America and Russia at the moment but havent convinced my boss that I need to visit those countries yet :smash:

Sounds like me until a couple of weeks ago, although I was (am?) a programmer analyst. Still had my Civil Service terms and conditions though, so I took the chance to 'volunteer' for redundancy.
Q. How do you know when your redundancy payment has reached your bank?
A. Your personal account manager  phones you up! Didn't know I had one. :D
Still undecided if I'll try and stay in IT, would love to do web design, or do something entirely different instead. Probably worry about it in the Autumn. :D :D :D

As you well know dude, i hate my job too. :( I dont want to get up in the morning to go (or indeed the early evening when on night shift), and from the moment i get there the only goal i have in sight is 10 hours later when i finally get to leave. Im not work shy, infact i work my arse off where i am and i get paid well enough for it, but my dislike for work is increased 10 fold by frustration. Because i know there is SO many jobs that i could do and probably enjoy, all within the company. But im stuck doing the same suckass job and basically not allowed to move to another area due to no more available/trained personell.
I mean, what other place has qualified technicians (such as myself :wack: ) but puts them in the build hall screwing bits onto lame ass cars as they go by you on a conveyor belt? Ive spoke to people in the Loom and Wiring section who are team leaders and/or technicians and they have LESS qualifications than i do! Grr.. Anyways.. Calm...

I like my job. :)
Obviously would prefer not to need to do a job at all but it's pretty damn good as jobs go.
I love my job - I work in Project management for an engineering company ( currently working on the Bugatti Veyron, GT Ford etc ). An exciting field to work in ( fast paced, new technology etc ) and some really talented people to work with.
What I hate is the useless ****-wit management we have. We've laid-off 70 engineers in the past year, but no managers or Directors ( we've actualy recruited one director who's done nothing for the past 5 months ). A couple of days after announcing the next lot of cuts one MD ( 3 divisions work on one site ) was organising a golf day for all the senior management, paid for by the company
Time for a new job I think.
I like my job too :)
Worked quite a few being a temp.
I like my job. Hard work, long hours, uncertain future and stressful but its still cool
Hmmm, I need a demo car
Need to think about the future ;)
I fooking love my job :smitten:
I am a database and systems development manager for a Wine education company. :D
Yes I get to taste amazing wines all the time and next week I HAVE to go to the Wine & Spirits Fair at ExCel and be forced to drink yet more wine just so I can get a proper feel for the business
Man I love my job (and its IT :p )

I hate my job!!!
I'm a Network Engineer and I sometimes like what I do, the downside being that my boss knows less than I do and I end up doing his work while he takes the credit.
In IT I find it hard to keep myself updated, company is not interested in keeping my skills current, just getting what they can out of me. It's a contract job too so no proper holidays / sick pay / public holidays.
I would dearly love to get out of IT....but into what? The only thing I did prior to IT was work in a fish factory!
I hate my job!!!

I like mine. Designing and building electronic circuits and learning loads of stuff while I do it.
Not enough pressure though - can quite easily spend days fixing/making stuff for home or the car and no-one bats an eyelid.... until the deadline :whip:

My job can be like that I can do as much or s little as I want....kinda my own boss. But other jobs I had , even though they were just dead end labourous jobs you kinda felt you earned your money..........kind of satisfying (spelling?)

I'm employed in a sixth form college as an A/V facilitator, but I do absolutly loads of other jobs, one of which is security, and as the college is situated in the middle of gang land, we get quite alot of trouble :indiff:
My job would be ok if i had double the pay
I work in a school (assistant/junior network manager)
the jobs ok, i like computers but my hearts with motors
i worked at a garage for about 6 months doing basic mechanics
and body work, i loved it but i could justify £20 a day !!!
my perfect job would be working with 200's,
i'd love to import parts from japan and sell Drift Spec S13/S14(a)'s :smitten:

Got made redundant, and no redundancy pay-off. So id say the benefits we're :censored:
80% of the time i hate my job (IT, 6th form college) the rest of the 20% iam either on a tea break or lunch ;)
Just been here too long really, need a new challenge and also somewhere where your customers ARNT SO BLOODY RUDE & IGNORANT!!
some aspects of my Job i love and some i cant stand
I'm an insurance underwriter, I work for the 3rd largest insurer as one in a team of 30 underwriters. Together, we are the most successful and profitable division of the UK arm of the company - so it kinda makes me feel pretty special that they chose me to work here :wack:
35 hour week on flexi-time, 25 days hol. 13 days off flexi if you work the extra hours. Alright pay, good pension, no contract worries, all the training you could want.
However, I'm starting at the bottom of the ladder when I know I'm better than that. I've got to work my way up on a "skills ladder" type scheme which takes bloody ages and is so boring and repetitive
And speaking to brokers all day  They're soooo incompetant  Wonder why we pay em 45% commission . Makes me laff that half of em are professionally qualified but can't grasp the most basic of insurance principles

I have to do A/V aswell in my school,
where in the middle of ****ing knowwhere,
more grassland than gangland!
yep i love my job  driving big feckoff artics!!
i only started doing it as a stop gap between leaving my business and what i would go back into in the motor trade.. that was 8 years ago!!
i'm a time served spanner jockey (with loads of certifcates wot sez i am and stuff :wack: ) i have done the manegement side of it from service reception to workshop control to parts... well all of it really.
then had my own workshop bodyworking cars and motorbikes. you people who are self employed/own business... much respect :notworthy .
had to pull out of that business because the then mrs DeSaint told me i was about to be a dad. needed regular dosh from that point.
i had the licence to drive the big wheelers so i thought that will do for now.
it's great... really really chilling... get paperwork, get wagon and trailer, drive out gate... i'm my own boss for the next 10 hours. i listen to what radio station i want, stop when i want, get a brew when i want... and the money is cool too. and i have to have time off at weekends by LAW.. how many jobs have that going for them

'till the end of May I'm working parttime in a courier company, payment's lousy and the boss is too stupid to appreciate and realise efforts of his workers... but it was fun for about two years (if you like to drive around)
the rest of the time I should be studying but I don't realy like it and have lost perspectives lately - it all takes some much time and gives you no money - I'll go insane soon...
plus I have to take my car off the road:(
gonna need to look for alternatives now quite badly as I doubt to pass the test in a couple of months

Yeah, I enjoy mine, work as a Postman for Royal Mail. I deliver to nice a nice rural area which has a relaxed atmosphere and fantastic views and gorgeous houses and the customers are always pleasant. Does help though that I'm working out of a van rather than a bike.
It has got a bit lame recentley though, the rounds have been made bigger, so its harder work, and the prepping of the delivories and sorting is hard work and boring. Once I'm out delivering though, its great, although I miss the earlier finishes that we used to get.
