View Full Version : Theoretical question..
As this is the most concentrated area of petrolheads I know I have a question for you.
If you had a £40k budget to spend as you liked on either a new or 2nd hand car (up to 3 years old) what would it be?
Take into account running costs (petrol, parts and servicing), and insurance but depreciation would not be an issue...
We have been discussing it at work and the suggestions are really widespread!

Honda NSX in Yellow
RX7 Twin Turbo in Black
Modified R33 Skyline in Bayside Blue of course
Mildly modded Porsche Club Sport(saw a nice red one the other day with Cup Alloys)
is that a good enough selection for you.

Actually, I think the NSX would be a very good choice.
The key to what Ross has asked is RUNNING COSTS.
I think I might be able to manage, just, to run an NSX if someone gave me the money and depreciation didn't matter.
The thing with Porches and the like is running the bloody things. Oh, and buying them in the first place, of course.

Running cost on my S14a are pretty bad! Petrol, Nissan servicing etc.
I had not thought about an NSX, thats a quality car (Yellow though?).
As an all round everyday car the best we can come up with is a 993 Carerra 4s.
My boss spent £40k on a left hand drive 355 Spider and its spent more time in the garage!

A second hand TVR Cerbra without a doubt, a car that can out accelerate a Diablo/F355 a NSX wouldn't have a hope in hell http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/biggrin.gif

Maybe just the one though.
Remember the running costs!
Is it viable to run a Jaguar XJR (you know, the Porsche beater)?

I'd never thought much about them till in the early hours of the morning, coming back from Le Mans I followed one for about 70 miles on A/B roads to the port. My god, I could just about keep him in view on the straights, but when the roads got twisty off he went. I only managed to keep up cos of other traffic slowing us down.
By a stroke of luck he got on the same Ferry as us so I went and had a chat with him. Decent bloke, not the least bit sniffy considering he must have spent 60K on the thing. http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/cool.gif http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/cool.gif

With out a doubt, it'd have to be the Granada from the Sweeney - the best sideways motor - Ever!
da-da-daaa da-da-daaa da-da-da-daaaaaa
And I'd spend the change on repairing the dinks and dents from crashing into bins, market stalls etc etc.
Then I could handbrake turn and park it on some wasteland somewhere, leaving all the doors open.
Shut it!

Ok
instead of the yellow NSX, lets go for a shiney black Turbo Nitroused NSX.
Sorry but the cars are simply Bad!!(as in good)
Their quick and they handle, their perfect for everyday use. they can be picked up reasonably cheap second hand, in comparison to tvrs and ferraris. they are rare and hardly anyone drives em. and running costs seem reasonable (judging by an article in EVO magazine)
One of the main reasons I chose the 200 was cos u dont see em on the roads, they are rare motors. thats why i'd choose the NSX over a porsche, tvr, ferrari etc etc. These r typical common sports cars.
I Can't tell the last time I saw an NSX on the road givin it some.
Tell a lie, it was kings road (couple weeks) a fit bird drivin it hard down Kings Road around 4am ish, on my way back from clubbin it

Remember, lads, TVRs break down.
Alot.
My boss was going to buy one but after driving one for a long weekend he said it was a pain in the ar*e.
Too noisy, damn uncomfortable and almost undriveable - the car isn't happy unless you've got your foot down.
Call me negative if you like......

I like the idea of an NSX, other than they are hard to find and I doubt you could just drop it off at your local Honda dealer when there was a problem.
TVR Cerbera's, hmmm, nice. But I have friends who are into their TVRs and there always seems to be problems (they are M,N reg though).
How about a new M3 (E46)? Seems pretty good value for what it is.
Anyway, I hate to say it but I am going to have to let the S14a go. I will be posting in the FOR SALE section within the next week or so. If you are interested keep an eye out for it!

How about an Audi S8 (don't laugh).
That's the one they use in the film Ronin with Robert De Niro - the best driving I've ever seen, especially the stuff through the narrow streets in those French towns. Unbelievable.
The S8 goes like stink and has all the luxury too. And you could afford to run it.
And it wouldn't break down. And...
