One for the SXOC nature lovers here...

We have a Blackbird nest in our back garden and have been watching them for weeks build the nest then lay eggs then hatch them out.

Just had a call from the missus saying that she saw a Magpie take one of the chicks - she managed to stop it getting taken, now we have an injured chick in the garden.

Question is, how do I get rid of Magpies as I don't want this to happen again.

make sure though you teach the cat not to eat the blackbirds or their chicks.

You could install a family of Crows ? .............. Personally I would do nothing, your fecking with nature, let it be ...... by killing the magpies, you are saving the blackbirds ..... but killing the pies ? ..... Who are you to say that a blackbirds life is more important than a Magpies. ?

Yeah, but Blackbirds are a dull black colour with orange beaks. ... Magpies are a beautiful black white patterened with titaniam blue fleks in the chest ... and they are as hard as fcuk in the bird world when it comes to a fight.

Basically if birds were cars, The magpie would be a silvia ... sounds :ghey: but is  .. and the blackbird would we a Lambo murgasdgfhahgf ... sounds cool, but just a little bit dissapointing

I only found that out looking for pictures to show - luckily my irish farmer daddy - well in his younger days taught me most of what i know about wildlife - seems ur male birds are mainly the more colourful ones

Aye i agree

Leave nature to itself - its us humans that have created half the problems within wildlife

Baby chicks will be getting eaten here there and everywhere at this time of year. Same with lambs etc. Natural balance and we shouldn't interfer

shoot one then hang it up in a tree (or get a decoy) this will attract its mate, then shoot that . Or get a Larling trap (i think) Farmers know all about them.

Johnny

shoot one

Or an alternative to killing animals to save them :-

This is the perfect excuse to buy some more bling for your car ... chromed battery covers, sills rocker covers ... install them and leave the bonnet open .... the pies will spend all there time looking at your shiney bits they will forget about there duty to eat chicks.

What are the laws regarding firing an airgun? As a kid I had one in somerset and thought nothing of shooting it at pretty much anything... now I'm a bit more grown up and living in a town I don't feel I can really get it out and start shooting...

Remove all forms of alcohol (especially Newcastle Brown Ale "Dog"), tell them all to move down to the bar and drink up and last but not least say something along the lines of "howay man the kebab shop is shuttin in lyke 10 minites, yi gaana be buggad if yi clammin lyke kidda!"

Well it works on me anyway ;)

Or was it the feathered type you where talking about?

If so no fecking idea !

We already have interfered, and created an artificial habitat that favours magpies and other corvids over songbirds............... :(

blast the evil satan-loving witches familiars!

You'll need to be good tho - they're extremely clever

I believe they are called daisy cutters, or...

1 sack of ammonium nitrate fertiliser and about 10 gallons of diesel fuel - aluminium powder is good for effect too..

Or.. just pretend you are having problems with insurgents protesting about being invaded by occupating forces "liberating" you and telling you how to live your life.

You might find AC130 Spectres patrolling your neighbourhood on the lookout for animals masquerading as homing pigeons / food sources / the resistance.
If that doesnt root them out, then A1 Abrams can be sent it - if they are particularly stubborn....

buy an airsoft gun :)

they won't kill the bird

but you'll certainly scare them away :D

repeat as necessary.

I've got a pair of these buggers nesting in the tree in my garden, they have sh!t all over the lawn killing patches of it and they generally scare of all the other birds.

I've borrowed an air rifle, but they are cagey animals. I can aim out of the velux window in my bedroom at the tree where they nest and the distance if about 50ft. I've only had one good chance to shoot one of them, but missed and scared it, now the bird wont land in the tree if it can see me peering through the gap in the window, so yes they are clever.

I read somewhere that you need to be completely hidden to shoot one because they are always on the lookout

Magpies are probably the brighest birds of all.

Nad I seem to remember something about them attacking baby lambs...

I've seen them attempt it - they go for the eyes. Fortunately I own a Remington - and sheep with eyes

I've seen a murder of Magpies (Yes it's a murder as Magpies are actually cool crows) take on an 8-man patrol on Salisbury Plain, it was touch and go until the sheep arrived to help out.
