convert avi to mpeg ???

is there a way to convert avi to mpeg, i put some movies on to a cd to play on my dvd player but it will only play the mpeg`s

is there a program i can download ??

TMPGEnc is probably the easiest solution. Later versions of Nero can do it if the right encoders are installed, but the quality is not great.
