I went in one of these and thought it was total rubbish. Not very fast, not exciting, rubbish inside, rubbish outside... sportscar by definition but boooorrrrriing.

Anyway Mint Sauce has been telling me that his mate has the 'RC' version whic is well fast, although I reckon it'll still be a bit rubbish.

Anyone know better? my memory is fading, I just know that the civic type-r seem plenty more exciting and ragged by comparison. Put me straight people :D

Also, what kind of power would you need for an S13 (or S14) to beat it... my guess is a Stage 1 with a front mount and a decent driver could do it fairly easily.

EDIT - Sorry this sounds like a 'vs' thread.. its not meaqnt to be that so please don't let it turn into one :) I just wanna know about the GT4 RC

I remember 'playing' with one when I was in the Lotus, my Impression that I was left with was that they were very over-rated, v. poor in the corners, v.poor point to point, and this was a Carlos Saintz version.

And for the mods no we weren't racing/pace-making, but it was a country road and the guy was holding me up.

The RC is the Jap import version of the CS, exactly the same afaik except for the standard stuff (square plate, speed limiter etc). Something like 205bhp standard but they weigh over 1500kg. From what pics I've seen the st185 interior is awful compared to s13s, it's nearer my old mk2 Astra :wack: I was gonna get one but got an S13 in the end due to cheaper to buy, group 16 instead of the Celicas 17, lower running costs, crap interior in the st185, and the help available in case it breaks. I was around the gt4oc for a while but the sxoc is better.

His is an ST205 (4 round headlights), the RC/CS were ST185s (popups). I think the st205 has 230bhp.

His is an ST205

I think standard 260BHP - but don't quote me

His is kickin 380BHP now - To drive - well for me not my cup of tea but still very entertaining  excellent build quality even if you don't think so :p

But its doing around 16 miles to the gallon at the moment :(

Hmm I seem to remember the guy who owned it (it was his company car) saying it ran over 200hp, and we did 145 in it - it felt very stable, but there was no push in the small of the back and cornering was yawn inspiring. even if it was fast it didn't feel particulary so. I'm interested in hearing Ade's comments though :)

I thought it felt heavy and had excellent build quality - certainly not creaky by any means, but the one owrd I'd sum it up with would be sluggish.

ps.. shame on you mint for nearly turning this thread into a VS thread !! hehehe :p

Hmm I had an ST185 too lol.

Compared to an S13 out of the box its a tiny bit quicker I feel (form road comparisons). Probably not on a par with an S14.

Interior is loads better than an S14, even if it doesnt look it. Build quality is better too.

They are a little slugish, but so is a 200 SX imho. Handling on them is ok, a bit wallowy but again so is a 200SX unless you change thing. In the wet you could power oversteer though. Bit cramped inside compared to an S14 with poor MPG, probably due to the weight.

I wouldnt own another one, but an ST205 I probably would but they are still a bit expensive at the moment.

I think the '94 has a 0-60 of abou 8-9 secs :ghey: with 200 odd bhp

But the '95 does it in around 5.5 secs :D

BIG difference

oooh 5.5 eh? how much power does it have?

I wonder if thats the GT4 RC that mint is talking about.. I can't imagine his mate bragging about 8 second 0-60s ??!

maybe the one I test drove had been utterly broken

it creaked like a motherbastardpieceofunoiledfurniture... all through the corners

it was the supercharged gt4, too.

PulsatingStar
22-04-2004, 18:14
There is no supercharged GT4, and the 0-60 times are known to be complete bollox :D

My mate has just bought a Sainz (yes, it is real) and its sloooooooowwww :indiff:

Looks nice, but thats about it. We had a little tear up the other day and even my S12 was quicker :)

They need to be modded IMHO before they become anything like the car they purport to be

RC/CS was ST185 (popups, 200bhp). ST185 was the 90(?)-94 model, the st205 (like ades, 4 headlights) was 94/5-98(?). I think the latest :ghey: fwd vvti one is a zz190?

The guy I know has the one with weird bonnet vents. One is pretty normal then theres a tube type on as well. Let me go find a pic.....................

The lastest GT4 is the ST205, ie the one Ade has. The new celica doesnt have a GT4 varient. There is also the ST165 though, for the wedge type shape.

Yep that's an st185 RC. The front bumper is a bit different and it has the vent instead of a scoop (like a scooby) (fmic instead of tmic).

They do not have frount mounted IC's. They have charge coolers where the top mount IC is on the normal ST185.

a lot of stuff has been written about the gen 6 celicas and most of it i agree on. But if you like me get a ss2 jdm import you are pushing 187 bhp as standard a few cheap tweeks and the 200 barrier is easily broken the st205 gt4 is an awsome machine for standing starts and for a lot of twisties but the 4wd system saps power and is vey expensive to maintain. i had been happy with my ss2 for the last 4 years but due to it being an import every time it goes tits up it costs me a grand ( universal import repair charge lol) so i test drove a s14a lovely inside good power but not low down and handles like shite. (my celi would eat it on any thing that wasnt straight )though this is easy to sort and cheap. The most important thing is i think it looks the dogs! so i am a total convert! for £ per pleasure i think it cant be beaten if you do a few mild mods . standard it sucks big time. the moral of the story though is different cars to different people one mans meat is another mans poison.

they do seem thou that all the drivers are abit er older pipe and slippers type..

Thats because us older people that have pipes and slippers also have more money and less to pay for insurance.

Which is why all the nice cars Ferraris, Masseratis, Lotus, porkers, S14s, st205s are all driven by the pipe and slipper briggade ........ why would we go out and by a saxo, nova, focus etc when we can afford a nicer car ? ;)

My mate has a GT4 and its bloody quick. He get 0-60 in about 5.4 secs. Although the guy is loaded so it wouldnt surprise me if he is running over 300 horses TBH.
