View Full Version : ADSL sharing with Windows ME...
Hi...
I am trying to share my broadband connection with my son's PC (which has Windows ME). I have bought a simple hub/switch and my PC still works OK, but I cannot get his to connect to the internet.
I have set up the gateway address, DNS addresses, and configured an IP address on the ME PC. The hub shows that a physical connection exists, but I cannot ping either my XP machine or the router (Zyxel Prestige 642r). I also cannot connect to the router using Telnet on this PC. My XP machine is working fine.
I have heard that ME can be a bit temperamental with networks... anyone got any suggestions. Am I going to have to upgrade the OS ? Have I missed something obvious ?
Thanks in advance...
Daniel

Shouldn't ME be configured to take this all from the DHCP server in the ADSL router? I would guess your ME and XP boxes would be allocated an IP address like 192.168.0.x and both would have a default gateway of 192.168.0.1 (which would be the ADSL router itself).
To be fair with the ME machine i would be hard setting the IP, DNS and default Gateway addresses.
Make life easier upgrade to xp run the network setup and let it sort it all out for you  ( i take it you did run the xp network setup disk in the me machine ?)

Just move to XP .. Me is the WORST, most BUGGED of all Win OS's ... better with Win '95 ... 2000 is good, XP is now near enough sorted, just upgrade ... honestly is your best bet.
Thanks for the info guys...
I am not dynamically assigning IP addresses from the router.
the router is 192.168.0.1 plugged into socket 1 on hub
my XP machine is 192.168.0.10 in socket 2
my ME machine is 192.168.0.11 in socket 3
I am not bothered about sharing files between the two machines - the ME machine is purely for web browsing / email etc.
Anyone know where I can buy Windows 2000 these days ?

?? Have you really got a router, or just an ADSL bridge? I would expect a router to have 4 internet ports on it for client connection...If you have just a bridge, then you would need to set-up Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on the XP box and have it route packets to/from the ME box.
It is a router...
Zyxel prestige 642r (http://www.cix.co.uk/~davedorn/reviews/hard/comms/zyxel642r.htm)
There is only one ethernet port - hence the hub.
Boy do I wish I had bought the 4 port one now... this was £180 when I bought it 2 years ago !!!
Can buy 4 port dsl modems for £40 now

I guess you have done the usual things, checked connections, swapped ports to ensure hub isn't damaged etc. Link light normally suggests that it is a physical layer link. Are the ME Nic and hub port running at the same speed? If all this is ok, then it may be the next suggestion.
Have you checked subnetmask on ME machine is correct?
If the config is correct the IP stack is fooked. I would suggest, remove all netwoking funtions of ME and the nadd them back in, ensuring that it reinstalls it from the CD. Sounds like the IP Stack is fooked.
Just I think that upgrading an OS, just to get an IP stack working is a bit overkill.
