Recently bought a new processor (celeron 2.4), motherboard(Asus P4S333) and hdd (Seagate 40GB 7200).

Put them in my old case (CPU overclocked to 2.6) - no worries, except that my power supply (230W) wasn't up to scratch and under heavy load (like prime95 torture test) the cpu fan SLOWED and CPU temp rose - Not too badly, only reached max temps of 56 degC or so (ambient air temp 25 here). Worked fine like this, and I used it for about three weeks, then

I got a new case - Omni P4 case, 400W PSU

Transferred everything across, worked fine.

Then I plugged in the front panel audio and usb...

No post. Speakers (plugged in the front) still appeared to work though, with the american asus chick telling me that "system failed cpu test".

Unplugged the usb connectors

No post.

Unplugged the audio connectors - ie back to what was previously a working system. I can't recall if it posted like this or not this time, but I don't think it did.

Tried various combinations of the usb connectors, reset cmos, checked all the jumpers, remounted the mother board, remounted the cpu, replugged everything in.

I cannot get it to post at all now :(

I'm going to try the cpu in a mates machine tonight, but somehow I feel it will work (every other time I've thought I've fried it it's been ok and there's been a simple solution). I'm also going to try it with the motherboard out of the case, but it is mounted correctly and I don't think this will work.

And even if I get it to post again, this doesn't solve the problem of the usb connectors :(

Please help me someone...

It looks like you have done all the usual stuff, apart from dropping known good stuff into your pc as a process of elimination...

or is it better to systematically try dropping my stuff into someone elses pc? Eg not sure I'd be able to find anyone to volunteer their cpu to me :)

More concerning for me is the relationship between usb port plugging in and system failure :( Any ideas on this??

:(

Well they take power from the motherboard so it could be linked to that... Thats why i suggested trying someones cpu in your mobo as if you get the same cpu error then it would be wrong which leaves the mobo...

I'm a bit worried the mobo might have fried the cpu though :( Don't really want to fry anyone else's cpu too

ps any reason you're up so late on a sunday night?? Don't you have to work tomorrow (today)?? ;)

Uh yes that is a possibility but I figured with the types of cpus you would be using there isnt that much of a price issue, I still very much doubt its the cpu though...

Um yes I have to leave home at about 8:30 to drive to work...

Ive reacquired my insomniac tendencies :(

:) cpu is cheap which is why I use it.

And I know all about insomnia, especially when it's related to this board :D

Hmmm... CPU works fine in another machine :(

Might have fried the motherboard

Have you set all the jumpers on the mobo correctly, the 400W PSU should be fine with the mobo and not broke it unless the settings were incorrect. Checked the memory?

yep, all jumpers are in the right spot.

Going to try the motherboard out of the case tonight. If no go, I'll get anew one :(

No go with the mobo out of the case, I guess I must have fried it somehow

So unless anyone has any wonderful ideas today, I'll be getting another one tomorrow... :(

any ideas anyone?

anyone :(

Can't things just spontaneously ignite down there anyways in 41 degree heat, really are fighting a loosing battle keeping anything cool. I know I've had my face peeled off in Sydney a couple of times :)

Let me know how you get on mate, like a car don't tweak the bugg3r till you have it working, then crack the multiplyer/FSB ;)

It worked fine for about two weeks, then nothing :( Very very related to plugging in the front usb ports... Not good. New mobo today.
