My s14a has the Sony CDX-605 changer which won't play CD-R. Can anyone advise which is the best Sony replacement as a DIY job that will play CD-R?
That got me thinking - should I hang on until Sony bring out a changer that supports mp3 too. Or will mp3 always need a change of head-end too? I don't fancy taking the dashboard to bits...

Cant see why the 605 wont play cdr's unless the optical block's on its way out. CD players have a bit of a harder time playing cdr's because the disks arn't as reflective as normal pressed ones so you'll find it can play normal disks but not cdr's. As for the question about an mp3 player, if sony do make one (i work for a sony service centre but haven't heard of a mp3 boot changer in the pipeline) you won't have to change the head unit, all the data processing is done at the changer.

Swapped in a CDX-646, 15 minute job as it has the same connectors and mounting points as the factory model. CD-R now play perfectly (but haven't tried CD-RW)

Sony say it has a 3-beam laser to be certain of CD-R playback; paid £169 from a local stockist. Have seen them a bit cheaper on-line...

AFAIK the CDX-646 used a the Sony bus for control so should be compatible with any reasonably modern Sony heat unit that supports a CD changer (the standard unit in my S reg s14a certainly works fine). From memory, the Sony bus plugs had a couple of squared-off locating pins inside the plug.

just wondering what head unit you have?
That changer will work fine with any sony head unit with changer control. Sony have used the same unilink control system on their changers since the year dot.
