DRIVERS with gas-guzzling motors face forking out £1,000 for road tax under shock new proposals.

Ministers are considering the move to encourage motorists to buy environmentally-friendly cars.

The £1,000 bill would apply to a range of models with high CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions.

They include a £14,100 Ford Mondeo 2 litre 16 valve, a £14,000 Vauxhall Vectra 1.8 litre 16 valve and a £16,300 Rover 75 1.8 T club.

The current top rate of Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) is just £165. But it would soar by more than 500 per cent in a new sliding scale of tax charges.

Transport Secretary Alistair Darling ordered a study into the tax banding system — known as graduated VED.

MORI researchers discovered that the current system failed to influence people to buy cleaner cars.

They found drivers chose a model based on price, reliability, image, brand loyalty, colour and size — but very rarely CO2 emission levels.

They concluded: “Key players in the industry, as well as drivers, feel that for these initiatives to be taken up they need to hit people in the pocket.”

The report proposed doubling the price between bands or increasing the largest band to £1,000.

The prospect sparked outrage among motoring groups last night.

Paul Watters, of the AA, raged: “It’s ludicrous. Motorists will be furious.”

Edmund King, of the RAC Foundation, said: “This would be a draconian increase and a double whammy on people with big cars. They already pay more at the pumps.”

Shadow Transport Secretary Damian Green warned: “Much higher road tax is on the Government’s agenda as the next phase in the war on motorists.”

Currently the yearly road tax for cars registered before March 1 2001 is £165 if they are over 1549cc and £110 if they are 1549cc or below.

VED for cars registered on or after March 1 2001 ranges from £165 down to just £55 based on CO2 emission levels.
Researchers stated: “Overall, the graduated VED scheme has had minimal impact on the UK car industry.”But they said cleaner motors were chosen for company cars when it was realised they could save on tax.

They suggested CO2 could also be cut by hammering high mileage drivers. Car tax could be incorporated into petrol prices so those who do many miles pay more.

Older cars, which tend to be less clean, could also be driven off the road by making the MOT tougher. But the report warned this could lead to more cars being dumped.

How about replacing the shitty, smokey old busses that drive round empty and polute way more than cars and get a decent public transport scheme in? You'd think with the amount of road/fuel tax they take already they could sort something out that works     :furious: :furious:

and if they did do it whats the betting that the smaller engined cars would still have to pay the same amount so the government gets even more money :indiff:

I can't ever see this happening as even people as stupid as the current government must realise such a move would cost them the next general election for certain.

VED should be scrapped altogether and the tax increased on petrol as a more even way of supposedly paying for roads.

Talking of ****wits...

Did you know...

Yesterday the government lifted its ban on GM crops...

One of the MP's and chief funders for the government is Mr Sainsbury's...

Mr Sainsbury's is a director of the company that has been given the go ahead to distribute GM crops...

Make of that what you will!

So I predict that the government will have to hold an inquiry after opposition, and the head of this will be Mr Sainsbury :wack:

if you don't like it, vote.

if you still don't like it, emigrate.

Yes, what a stirling idea...... that way every car manufacturer instantly looses most of it sales of anything over 1L, there will be millions of cars people are lumbered with overnight that they cant afford to run.

Another well thought out plan by the government, there are no words to describe these people, if a normal person came up with ideas like that they be laughed at and promptly ignored...

Imagine if this happens, myself as an example, over night i would have to pay £1000 for a 2L car tax, cant do that, pure and simple would have to sell the car, who the f$%^'s gonna want to buy it with that sort of tax attached?! Lumbered with car i cant run... great one you f&^%*ing bunch of to$$ers.

SMiFFADS plans to emigrate are suddely looking less like a pipedream and more and more realistic, verging on aa sensible financial idea.

i'm sorry but fuel consumption:
my bluebird running totally standard: 400 miles to £30
modified slightly: 300 miles to £30
mothers pug (956cc's of raw power): 250 miles to £30

now the big bird wasn't the slowest of cars and was rarely driven forgivingly, my mothers pug rarely goes above 40 mph so is the small car better? i think not!

bluebird was an F plate
pug POS is a K plate

go figure:wack:

A lot lower actually mate. No road tax, basic rate tax is lower, cost of food and drink is of bargain proportions in comparison to UK.

Add to that the fact that the motorways are almost always empty except at holiday time, house prices are a fraction of UK ones and everyone has two hours for lunch.

Paradise :D

Oh and I forgot to mention the Health Service. Which is absolutely bloody superb and makes ours look like the 3rd world service it is. Do the French pay more to have it? No. It's just better run.

I do vote, and I actually really like this country so emigrating is out of the question. But wouldnt it be pleasant if maybe something could be done about our transport system?

Am I right in thinking our country spends a really low % of the money taken as tax on transport, petrol etc actually on the transport system itself, as opposed to many other countries who spend a much higher % or even over 100%?

I am sure I saw some figures somewhere that were quite shocking.... right or wrong?

My first thoughts were, oh my god the Mustang is 5.0 litres and would have really high CO2 levels. :annoyed: Then I realised it is pre 1972 and therefore tax exempt. :D :D :D :D :D and :D
