View Full Version : Dead Mid....
does anyone suffer from duff mid-range? i've replaced the front components and rammed an 11" sub in the boot (sealed box) but my mid is still fairly duff.
i've been contimplating rebuilding the door panels to give the speakers a better housing to sit against...
what do you guys think?
Cheers, JP

It depends what you replaced the original speaker with and how you're driving it (off the head unit or external amp).
If you upgraded them to something which handles more power, but still running it off the head unit's amp, then they're not gonna sound very impressive. If anything, they'll sound worse than the original ones esp. at high volume levels.
If you're running them off an external amp, then try adjusting the gain level a little. Although the gain level shouldn't be used as a volume level, it necessary to adjust according to the output levels of the other speakers in the car. Also try turning the Sub amp's gain down a bit as it may be drowing the mid frequencies. The sut off frequency can also be raised a little on the sub amp top reinforce the lower midrange frequencies, but this will cause the sub to sound louder and punchier.
Once a speaker has been upgraded from OEM stuff, it recommended to run them off an external amp as the Head unit amp just doesn't have enough juice to push them to the stage where they're designed to work most efficiently.

200sx doors are good for sound compared to most cars ...
but if you want the midbass to keep up with that 11 sub (is that a focal btw? http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif) then you'll have to do something about the doors ...
pull the trim off ... and cut up some 3mm MDF wood to cover the larger access holes in the door and stick them on with a lotta duct tape ... and then cover up all the other smaller holes with some tape ... and you'll get a nice midbass boost
the next step is to make up a nice thick heavy wood speaker pod to replace that plastic hunk of junk ... and the next step after that is to completely sound-deaden the doors with something like stinger roadkill .. or dynamat ... not cheap tho
amplification is very important too
what components are they by the way? are you using an amp? the more power the better.. can never have too much good clean power for a front stage http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/smile.gif
