View Full Version : Subs on the rear shelf?
In the S14a could you put say 2 8" subs in place of the standard rear speaker, amp them obviously, to save on boot space or is it going to vibrate/resonate too badly?
Is it easy to cut into the shelf to accomodate the subs? or am I better off having no boot and getting a sub box?
any replies much appreciated

I'm having 2 x 8" cut into the shelf sometime in the near-ish future, funds allowing you see. It's possible to get 2 10' in there if you want to. Just make sure you make a nice MDF shelf to go over the stock one and line it all with sound proofing to stop vibration, as the shelf virbates anyway.

Yeah should work nicely. I think I have an old copy of Fast Car with a black S14 that they did this on. The article is quite good - if I can find it I'll scan it in for you. They used a couple of free-to-air 8" subs and made a custom MDF parcel shelf up.

Yeah, I've got that too. That's where I got the idea from. Have been thinking about it for ages but it's never been a priority. They used 2 10" JL Audio (10IB4's).
Winner! I want to get 2 subs there it will be stormin'. Do you need to specifically get free to air subs or will any do?
Sounds like that article is worth a look if you could scan it etc.
Dan, what subs/amp are u considering? I'm thinking 2 x 10" Alpine type R's and a V12 amp if I can afford it just cos i think they look the business.
Whack some acoustic carpet across thats black and bobs your uncle some well concealed beat boxes.

There are several things you need to do and remember here.
Number 1 : you need to replace the standard shelf, it will be no good with the extra weight and vibration. You need to replace it with an MDF shelf. You can either make this yourself using the original as a template or there are pre-formed and covered ones available.
Number 2 : You NEED to us "free air" sub's and not subs that are designed to go in a box. If you use subs that are designed to be in a box you will be ever so disappointed. They need restricted air space to work properly and an open boot is not nearly restricted enough.
There are advantages to free air subs in that you will not need to use up as much space as a sub that is in a box but the draw back of this is that the performance will never be as good as that of a boxed sub.
I was at Hiteq a week last Saturday and saw the car I think people are on about. I met its owner who has just written an ICE installation manual for Haynes which should be due out in about a month or two.
The guy has put two 10 inch JL Audio subs into the rear shelf, with JL Audio 6.5" components up front. There is an Alpine head unit with slide out display and alcantara surround.
There is an excellent false floor build in the boot with three compatments. The centre lifts up to a spare wheel, the left shows a Phoenix Gold 4600 powering the whole system, and on the right is an EQ, etc.
Sounded great as well, he gave me a demo. I will definetly be buying this Haynes manual when it appears !

Just remember that the shelf is a structural part of the car.
Not something us S13 owners have to worry about ;)

Spinner> I'm already running a Nakamichi MB100 Head unit and a Phoenix Gold XS4600 amp, with the stock fronts for now and I have been using one of my JL Audio 10W3's in a box, but it broke loose a few weeks ago and I took it out and couldn't be arsed to sort it, so it's in the house now, doing sod all!
lol Dan.Hate it when stuff goes P.Tong.
Thanks for the effort of putting the article up. I now just have to decide what to do!!
So far the shopping trolly looks like this;
Pioneer Mindisc 7300 head unit (OEL graphics- nice!)
Alpine components up front
Alpine sub 10" type R (in box?)
Alpine V12 Amp
