View Full Version : Bent steering arms from drifting

I was having a play on my private airfield a couple of weeks ago and bent the nearside steering rod on the rack following a large armful of opposite lock. I'm not sure why it went, maybe it was a combination of it already being slightly bent :ghey: and quite a grippy surface.
Anyway, I straightened it out but don't want it halting the fun at Silverstone on Sunday. I'm thinking of strengthening it with an angle iron section welded the length of both rods between the rack and ball joints. Has anyone else had any problems with plastacene steering components?
Need to sort it this week.
Cheers.

200's are very well known for doing this, they also snap tie rod ends, which can be very dangerous. The S14 rods and ends are better than S13, but I fitted Tein hard tie rods and Tein hard tie rod ends yesterday as I don't want to end up with 2 wheels steering in different directions mid drift :indiff:..

The rods off the steering rack? I didn't know you could uprate those, or are you talking about something else? Also, does the S14a rack fit straight on, as I may be able to get hold of one.
Cheers Phil.

yep their call tie rods, and the bit that connects to the hub is a tie rod end :)

I don't think the s14 rack will fit a 13, but I can check for you :)

Sorry mate, I knew that;) but didn't know if you were referring to the same thing as me.
Are they easy enough to fit, and what do they cost, where from, please?
Cheers.

cool ;)

Tie Rods and Ends 'should' be £150ish I think, and they are relativly easy to fit, but you obviously need the tracking setup after.. I fitted Tein adjustable tension rods at the same time so will be trying my hardest to get my car aligned properly before the weekend..

Im not sure if the rack is the same or not, or just sthe track/tie rods are different. The S14 has approx 20mm more track width than the S13 though for sure...

I guess strengthening my tie rods will do for now, and I'll see how it goes. Thanks:thumbs:

Have seen these snap before from kerb contact, but if yours is bent its more likely to snap. If you want to strengthen it the best idea is to take it off the car (ideally) and weld a snug-fitting tube over it. weld as close to the threaded and jointed ends as possible. I have a spare S13 rack you can have for 50 quid, that has 2 good tie rods on it.

Cheers for the offer, but I'm going to get the metalsmith at work to strengthen them for me, and we'll see how that works.
If I do need one, I'll bear you in mind. Where are you based, BTW?
