I was told two reasons as a kid as to why they went back....
1... It was because kids were being run over on their way home from school because it was dark early..
2... Something to do with the farmers and milking cows...
My mum told me both of these, personally i think the school kids one is crap coz it makes no sense...
Did you know that in Arizona they dont move the clocks back or forward ??

Real reason:

Apparently there is a substanial increase in the number of animals being run over directly after a time change as they have got used to crossing the road at a ceratin time and suddenly the next day the roads are much busier at that time.
Could be rubbish of course ;)
I thought the clocks were changed by and hour (daylight saving time) because of the length of daylight during the war was increased or summin, what ive always been told anyway.
