Monitor connections are usualy the same over the range to PC;s
On the back should be your signal port usualy coloured blue.
Do you have a Flat screen monitor or CRT ?

you sure your looking at the monitor port and not the COM port

i get some pics lads:o as my explanation probably wasnt the best  i 99% certain it is the monitor port as it seems exactly the same shap apart form they are both male connections

Sabrex - no CRT or flat screen my friend :( just a standard normal 15" monitor ( which cane with my old computer )

Pretty much every home PC in the last 10 years has a 15-pin female D-type VGA connector.

It's not missing the graphics card by any chance?

Maybe the VGA port is onboard the motherboard on this one which means its up nearer the top. .....
?

Is it onboard or a VGA card?

VGA and serial ports *are* exactly the same shape. Serial port only has 9 pins though (2 rows, 5 and 4) whereas a monitor port has 15? pins in 3 rows. Serial will be male (plug) and vga female (socket) on the back of the pc.

i would try and stick to win 2k, or better still blag win xp off somebody. how far do you get before your mouse and keyboard give up? are they plugged in the right way round - i.e. mouse in the mouse port, keyboard in the keyboard port?

as you're booting up you should see a message that says something like 'press <a key> to enter setup' and it will tell you which key. it's usually del, esc or f1 or combination of them. this will take you into the bios setup screen and you can get some specs from there - cpu speed amount of ram etc.

there may also be a key you can press to show the POST (power on self test), this will show if your keyboard/ mouse/ hd etc is being recognised at start up

it's hard to troubleshoot this sort of stuff without seeing it. it would also help if you could try and get windows to boot into safe mode to see if it runs ok without all the drivers and stuff loaded. try restarting and see if you get this option

also, if you can get started up, go to start - run and type 'eventvwr' this will show you the logs. look at the system log and it may tell you what's failing.

good luck :)
