I recently fitted a blaupunkt head unit and unless you wire up the aerial correctly it won't work. Which is wierd. Try unplugging the aerial from your standard rad/cass, it won't power on without it plugged in.
basically the aerial has 2 wires, a thick one and a thin one, and the jack on the end is not a standard item (ie, it only fits a nissan stereo). I had to bodge it with a couple of terminal blocks fastened to each prong of the aerial then wires out of the blocks to the stereo aerial input (thin one is earth). To get mine to work I had to make another connection from the aerial earth to the case of the stereo, weird.
Hi Dave, sussed it out now.
The Clarion does not have an earth, only through the aerial connection, that's why it won't power up with it's disconnected.
The thick wire is the retractable aerial and the thin one is the rear screen aerial.
Haven't taken the plug to bits just used the thick wire and an adaptor plug to go to the Panasonic head unit. Gets FM OK so that'll do for me. I think the screen aerial is for AM reception and the earths probably couple up inside the plug.
Just a guess mind, Cheers.

You earth shouldn't come from the Aerial.
It should earth through the mounting carrier in the dash.
I had this weirdness too when fiting my Sony, i was half way through creating an earth when I realised what probably happend.
Earthing through te aerial is very bad though.
I have a rover once which earthed EVERYTHING (heater, screen heater, dash lights ...)through the aerial, got red hot!!!!!
Was the stereo pulled out from the dash at the time? if so that may be okay, try putting the stereo in the dash properly but with out the aerial in, it should work. if not create an earth from somewhere else, there are plenty of places around. Help if you have a multimeter/continuity tester though.
Jezz.
