saturday night managed to find a large expanse of smooth wet tarmac. (NOT a public road btw) and had a go at a donut.

piece of cake innit?

2 complete rotations, but more importantly managed to feed out of the spin in the direction i wanted to go. feathered the throttle to keep it nice at about 5-6k. Then got ambitious and performed a figure of 8. ok, only in 1st, so road speed was minimal, but i didn't hit anything:thumbs:

However I have no illusion that i was drifting, as there was of course no foward movement. Question is, how do you start drifting?

If i had reduced the amount of lock applied, the donut would have become a larger diameter, but would i have been drifting? Or do you have to take the plunge and launch the car whils moving? Can you ease in gently, or is it like a handbrake turn? Try it a 5mph and nothing happens, try it at 30 and round she comes....

If you get caught doing it though, you wont be happy :(

Believe me, its not fun standing in front of judge in a court room for doing it!!

Keep it to the track/driftdays

I progressed from donutting to drifting.
Now I find it easier to drift than donut.
The basic differences are that donutting will control itself once you have gone into the donut, but drifting is a controlled modulated slide, which requires constant corrections with the steering and throttle.
the best way to practice is to try opposite lock donuts as its closest to drifting and donutting and you can get. An opposite lock donut is basically the same as a normal donut but instead of turning into the donut, you are turning away from the donut but the car is still going the the direction of the original donut.
all you have to do is to turn into the donut as you would normally but when it starts to swing round turn into the slide and try and hold the slide. You will mess up more times than you will believe, but once you learn to catch the slide, then you'll learn how to hold the slide with the steering and the throttle. Then you will have the basics of what drifting is about.
Once you have mastered them then all you have to do is increase the radius of the donut till its the afformentioned controlled slide. then you can apply the same technique when drifting on "Your own private stretch of highway which bears uncanny resemblence to the highstreet at 2am after a rainstorm";)
It'll take time but it'll be worth it. Trust me.
Good luck:thumbs:
