View Full Version : Is this frowed apon by drifting groups?

Just wondering if the hard core drifters looked down on people using crap rear tyres and good front tyres to aid lossing grip at the back (help avoid understeer). Is this classed as cheating? Seems like an easy fix to any underpowered cars or similar.

Cheers,

I used to think the same about using crap tyres, cause I'm running standard'ish power, but find it a lot better using decent tyres now

When you say crap tyres what do you mean? Do you mean part worns, or tyres that are actually made by someone crap? Reason i ask is i was just going to get part worns for the back, but i was going to try and get decent sets though.

what about just using narrow tyres to overcome the power to grip problem? 155 or similar

There's nowt wrong with that !

Especially if you're still in the learning process, you will be drifting at lower speeds and therefore would be easier to control.

In japan they drift at much higher speeds than we do in the UK so they use wider tyres cos it looks better but they still drift because of the extra speed they carry.

Just my take on it.

Cheers

What Ade said.. :) I now prefer running a wider tyre on the rear, feels nicer since i went from 14's to 15's also. The profile of the tyres de-creased which improved the feel alot... 195's seem fine on the rear of an AE86.

Oh yeah, thats a nice Sig Ade! Who did it for you? :D

Haha I figured you had made it Pazza seeing how you mentioned it like that.

And Phatty, as Ade doesnt have sigs turned on so wont see his own perhaps you should edit it to something super gay later this week to keep him on his toes

no it's not frowned upon :) I normally run 235's front and rear, but when I can't be bothered to change my fronts, I leave the GTR34 wheels on and they are currently running 255's..

Both or either, not decided yet. Putting slim rears on would mean finding a different sets of (steel probably) wheels for the back wouldn't it? Especially if it was 155 like mentioned.

I was also thinking of it from the point of view of putting less strain through the car (especially the transmission).

I'm a bit confused about what i'm doing at the moment, as i don't know when i'll be able to afford a S13. I guess i'll use my S14 for the February Silverstone practice, if it happens, and i will use part worns on the standard rims i'm getting off newclearbomb, if he replies to me that is. :p

I dont think its very controlable when you put skinny tyres on though!!

Imagine going around a bend with ice on it, would you want 155 wide tyres on the rear  Doubt it cause you cant control it, you would just spin out

Same thing for drifting I reckon  You need to be able to control the drift round the bend

I drift on 205 Dunc, and I've got standard'ish power

All my opinions of course tho :)

I'd quite like to find a hardish compound tyre (high wear resistance, low grip) for the rears for drifting only of course. Don't know if this is a bad idea too?

How many s13's are drifting with close to standard power? I'll just be a ballhair over standard bhp.
