When watching drifting, if a small puff of smoke comes from the rear tyres just before creating the drift, should I assume they have pulled on the handbrake?

Yes I think so ,
specially during the transition between sideways approach and corner entry. The car has gone more or less straight during SA, they need to use handbrake to forced the turn of the car into the bend.

Moreover, Ive seen D1 drivers using handbrake to initiate SA. This time the lock becomes more noticeable.

I think that hard 2way LSD also contributte to create smoke, since they lock very fast the internal wheel (with less weight) during braking.

BTW, this a good example of drifting handbrake use:

Shift locking using a nice 2 way diff will lock the wheels in a similar way (I think)
