IMHO this awesome technique makes the difference between REAL drifting (drive all time beyond grip limits) and FAKE drifting (aka good skills doing powerslide).
SA is something Ive been trying and practicing since I bought my car 3 months ago. Last trackday was the ideal situation to do (try) it.
The best I achieved was a (more or less) unexpected SA during hard braking in the top of third gear approaching to a tricky right double-bend. The car rotated very fast and I let the steering to full opposite lock , then grabbed again. The speed in that moment was about 80 mph (I know it because I looked at the speedo in that moment). Note that I had 3 bars at the rear wheels. :D
I had drifted for years with my GTI 1.9, but no at such speeds. The feeling of the car was just superb, and she kept that angle for about 25-30 metres. During the drift I lost a lot of speed and, by the time I recovered (softly) from sideways, I was doing 50 mph at the proper entrance point.
Problem was, the car was still in third, with engine out of the turbo action range. Bad way of loosing a good show. :annoyed:
The weight transfer had been very fast but smooth and the corner entry just brilliant.
Later, analyzing with more calm the situation, I realized what (IMO) I should have done to complete a REAL drift corner entry:
1) I should had inserted second gear during the SA and kept the clutch down, waiting for the point where the car starts to recover grip.
2) Once the car had started to recover grip due to the reduced speed and the corner entry was near, I should had used handbrake to forced keeping the oversteer and, at the same time, making the car turn into the bend.
3) In that moment I was supossed to released the clutch an apply gas in the right amount to make a regular powerslide corner exit.
A japanese amateur drifter has told my that he has seen (live, me in video) D1 pros doing SA at the top of forth gear... thats about 110-120 mph!!!!!!!
He said that this is possible due to a very special car setup (and of course due to awesome skills!); one of those D1 cars will understeer like hell in normal driving, he said.
What do you think guys about SA? Has anyone more information about it?
P.S: Sorry if my english is crap sometimes...
