Ok, has anybody managed to change the oil filter on their S14/S14a?

I have been unable to change it because it's in such an awkward place to get to - and have been changing my oil without changing the filter.

Do I need a special tool, or is there a way?

I don't really want to remove the inlet manifold before anyone suggests that! (or any other engine ancillary!)

In the manual (of the S14a) it says you need a 'cap spanner' to change the oil filter I want to do mine myself as well, I have some small ramps but until I find out what a 'cap spanner' is I won't start.

I have had a good look at the bottom from my pit, but it looks harder than getting at it from the top. I think the spanner must go in between the inlet manifold and the wing, and with a bit of wiggling might go over the filter.

Do you know where I can get a cap spanner for the filter?

I've used both the chain wrench and strap filter tools from halfords with the right extension bar and a socket from the top.
It's not the best is it ? I think if you get the socket bar wedged in the top right hand corner looking towards the side of the engine there should be room for it with a 6" extension bar.
Sometimes I can get it off by hand, but it kind of hurts trying. slightly unfortunate phrase http://300zx.co.uk/200sx/ubb/frown.gif

I have a S14 and did it with my hand??
The nack is to push it towards the engine while trying to undo it, worked for me any ways.

I'm glad someone else found it difficult- I had to do my 3000 mile oil change without a new filter

I put on rubber surgical gloves when undoing which aids grip. Difficulty in loosening is usually a result of some muppet fitting it without oiling the seal first

My first oil change I had to use a strap wrench to get it off but subsequent changes have been fine by hand

Yeah, I got it by hand (ok, nearly broke both wrists but it came off!). Make sure you smear some silicone grease around the rim of the new filter when it goes on otherwise it'll be a b*tch agian in 5000 miles!

The old oil filter came off in my hands!
Word of advice though... Don't buy an oil filter from Halfords - the one I bought having consulted their little chart DID NOT FIT.

I had to take it back and go somewhere they knew what they were doing to get a proper filter.

Yeah, I made that mistake once. The halfords one is loads bigger for a start.
I think if you take the alternator cables off, there might be room to squeeze it in, but I didn't bother trying.

Is this a cap spanner?

When I say 'didn't fit' I mean the Halfords filter (Champion C109) had the wrong thread to fit on the engine! It was also a bit on the large side, but would have just fitted had it actually had the right size thread down the middle!

My opinion of Halfords has, as you might expect, dropped from 'they're a bit dim' to 'they're a shower of muppets'. I bet the stoned looking till tart won't even bother to get their little chart updated either...
