View Full Version : Waaah no more SXOC during working hours :(
Due to a Draconian new Internet usage policy we've been restricted to 30 minutes personal use during lunch hours and Bulletin boards etc are banned full stop, with possible disciplinary action
Dave

I'm at home now, just left after a night shift.
This is gonna suck big stylee :(
Especially on a 12 hour shift when the only thing that keeps me sane is the Net :(
Ho-hum, have to get more programming practice in I suppose :)
Dave
Dave in "post count drops dramatically" shocker :(
no way around it then?

Nope, not unless I want to get sacked and tbh, as much as I love the SXOC / Net .... it's not worth it :(

Dave leave your PC on at home and RDP into it ;)
You know you need to be able to access your PC for work reasons ;) :D
Si :)
Dave .
Get a Blue tooth access point , plug it in to the network and surf on your phone :-)

LOL Trust me these thoughts have been going through my head :D
My PC at home is no 24/7 anyhow but I've no way of connecting to it. I can't get a direct connection out of the office unless I go through the firewall and then all of the ports are blocked and only the Terminal Servers are allowed out :(
Dave
Gutted mate :(, I dread the day I get pulled up for sxoc useage at work
Why don't you just pick up a 56k PCI modem, for as little as under £10 from somewhere, and install it in your works PC. Then use a double adaptor to an analogue phone socket and set up a call cost only dial up with someone like BT or C&W depending who your company's outgoing lines are with.
I know it's not great, but for a tenner you get about 50k access speed.

If i found out someone was doing that on the network here i would make sure they got very severly disiplined!! You would effectivly open up a unsecure link into the companies network, which would REALLY pi$$ off the admins.
Not a good idea..... Terminal Servicing to your home PC is good though.....
see if there is an unsecure 802.11 gateway in your site area and buy a handheld to access it.

do you have windows XP pro at home? Then you have a built in terminal services server.
you can use the windows 2000 client to access your XP pro machine.
you get a few graphical glitches, but it works :)
Goddamn Dave, no more SXOC @work? What a pi55er :(
Wouldnt it be possible getting it on text-mode somehow by using yer home comp as a relay station?
Daniel
I got around ours by sending myself an e-mail with a thread link to one ot the topics . worked a treat for me
normally it would come up with a websense block type thingy if i accessed it by sxoc.co.uk /.com

Yep i too have recently been bollocked at work for "Abusive misuse of the internet and email facility"... Got a written warning too.. :( But i didnt have the full on 2 verbal warnings... just my department head (Who is a nice guy and acts as one of the lads) came over to me and told me that i had been spending a bit too much time on the net and other ppl had noticed... This happened twice)... i was not taken into his office and told i was being issued a verbal warning and it has been recorded (Had i been i would have stopped there and then if it was that serious)... Is this strictly legal? This happened and i just bent over and took it as i like my job and its great cash... Should i appeal or just take it? Is there anywhere i can ask (Citizens advice maybe?)
All these ideas to get me browsing are great, but theres no way I can connect to my pc outside, heres how the connection at work .. works.
INTERNET <-- PROXY Servers <-- Terminal Servers.
Only the terminal servers are allowed out through the proxy, anything else is blocked. The terminal servers are locked down to hell and you can't run anything on them that isn't already on them. I have no way of getting my Fat client to connect to my PC without going through the proxy servers :(

Dave, are they monitoring web traffic to sites?
If so, use an anymous proxy such as www.anonymizer.com
That should do the job.

Id say they r monitoring urls and times in their logs. So if using things like anonymizer or megaproxy n shite hes pissing the admins off too :(

He wouldnt need to take you into the office to give you a verbal warnign but he should have made it more plain that it was a warning. Also he would have needed to have a note put in your employment record staing that he had given you the verbal.
To me it would be more important to know how long the warning is live for. 6 months is a reasonable length of time but it should be writen down in you terms of employment.
Making appeals is always difficult if you like the job, as it could get his back up and then the job may turn sour, sometimes best to use it as a learning curve. And remember Bosses are always the boss, and however much they want you to treat them like one of the lads, they will always have to do the nasty incase it gets done to them by their boss

Cheers matey... I have been told though that there is a precedure that must be followed for a verbal warning and i should have been told that it was a verbal warning and i should have also been told that it had been noted in my employment record... you are right i suppose he is my boss... i have been a mega good lad though for the past couple of months... NO personal internet or NO personal email... I do it at home... Oh well... It is work i suppose...

If they're monitoring you, chances are that they have the capability to block certain types of Web Traffic. Most Filters turn off the ability to piggy back via another proxy.... I know SurfControl does.
You get used to it :(
