View Full Version : Brakes.................eek!
Hi folks!
I've been reading for a couple of months, and even made one post, but I'm now hoping to get a bit more involved - so here goes!!
I have an M reg S14, which I've had for about 18 months. Trying to decide whether to do a few mods or swap it for something else (what tho....?).
Playing out today, I had my brakes very hot! Very smelly and starting to lose effectiveness. This happened much sooner than I thought it might!
So, what's the prob? Are standard brakes crap? (newish pads, everything works ok) or am i just a thug? Do I need a complete upgrdae (£1000?) or new discs and pads?
All advice gratefully received!

Its the standard pads, get some Mintex or EBC greenstuff pads they will make a world of difference, they shouldn't fade.

Greenstuff pads for an S14 ? Last time I looked they only did the standard black pads. Maybe I should have another look, I'm sick of dishing out 70 quid a time for the standard nissan parts.

S14 calipers are the same as 300zx's and I have 300zx calipers on my S13 and I have been quoted for greenstuff pads (about £70)

You can get Greenstuff pads for the S14, I was looking at a set at Billing last weekend. Think the were about 80 quid.

Right, cheers !
I'll have another look then. If 300zx pads fit I'll try some of them out. I reckon I'm going through nissan ones every 6 months.

From the people I've spoken to, the biggest problem is the discs not the pads. Get yourself some grooved discs, so they wipe the pads clean and make a big diff to the performance. Ideally though, if you're gonna give them a fair bit of stick for a while then get both sorted.

I have been warned about grooved discs, the grooves fill up with brake dust and then the kill the pad. I was told that drilled dics dont suffer this problem.

Believe it or not, the holes are only there for weight reduction!

One option would be to get Skyline Disks.
I have 330mm R33 Disks and Calipers on my S14. May be worth speaking to Middlehurst and find out if they have any left over from Skyline upgrades!
I paid £300 for my nearly new Disks incl. Brembo Calipers and got Norris Designs to fit them.
May be a space issue if you have the standard wheels on though...its a bit tight back there!

You can't fit the brembos with the standard wheels, you need a minimun of 17's. I've already checked, my brembos are sitting in the garage waiting for my 18's to arrive...

Just a thought on this one... do drilled/grooved discs help to prevent pad glazing at all ? This is a big area where standard pads fall down, give them too much grief, they glaze up and they're useless.

Yeah they do. The grooves wipe the face of the pad clean as they pass, which improves the braking efficiency and helps to stop glazing.
